"That's probably right," Harper replied. He looked at Kohana. "I thought you said that it wasn't very far?"
-
"Your sense of distance is rather different from mine," Kohana decided, braiding a strand of her hair to have something to fiddle with. "I am accustomed to travelling great distances at a time. But do not fear, we should find it by tomorrow."
-
"My version of 'not very far' is we'll get there in a day or less," Harper said. Harper looked around at the darkening sky. "Do we have to ride through the night or should we set up camp while it's still light?"
-
"We should probably make a camp if you're unused to long travel. Do you prefer trees or caves?" Kohana asked innocently.
-
"I've been trained to use either one," Harper said. "Caves offer more shelter while trees offer more of an escape."
-
"Seeing as we have mounts, then we should rest in caves. I don't like to, but it's much safer," Kohana said, pursing her lips in distaste. "Tell me about your training."
-
"I'd rather not talk about it," Harper mumbled. He didn't want to tell anyone about it ever.
-
Kohana nodded and there was an uncomfortable silence before she piped up. "Then I'll tell you about mine instead. Is that OK?"
-
Harper nodded. "Alright."
-
Kohana kicked her legs with a happy hum. "When I was five summers old, I was given an evaluation test. It's so that the elders can see what you're best at. Some were meant to be good hunters, others meant to be good warriors. I was chosen as a scout."
-
"Interesting," Harper said.
-
"I didn't like that, so I decided to train in everything behind the elders' backs. Even though we're not allowed to do it. I learned English from the other people too. I got caught, eventually, so they punished me," Kohana babbled.
-
"What did they do?" he asked, looking at her.
-
"Made me live alone in the wild for a week," she said, braiding rope with vines. "It was kind of hard because I was eight summers old, but I managed. And, to their dismay, I learned lots."
