It was a long way. There were lots of tourists too, so it was crowded. So we were all understandably tired when we finally got there.
-
I held up my phone and snapped a picture, having to crouch strangely to get the right angle before straightening up.
-
I took a picture with my kindle. Then I put it back in my gym-bag-backpack-whatever-they-call-those-I-don't-remember. Drawstring bags? I just called them gym bags. I swung one strap onto my shoulder, and was about to put the other one on, when the strap that was already on my shoulder broke, and my bag tumbled to the ground. I just turned around and looked at it. Then I picked it up. "My gym bag died," I said.
(this actually happened, except it was when we were visiting the Senate.) -
I bit my lip to keep myself from laughing. "It did. What do we do about it?"
-
"We fix it best we can," I said. I put the two strings through the hole, and tied a knot to keep it there. Then I put it back on my back and started walking again. It fell off behind me again. As I turned around, I saw people taking videos of this. I wasn't surprised, nor did I feel embarrassed. I put my hands on my hips. "Now I think it's just being stubborn," I said.
-
(yes, people were actually taking videos of me and my broken bag.)
-
(wut)
"It definitely wants to die, that's what," I said, tying it into one of my unfixable knots. "Let's hope that works."
(You know those knots you tie and you can't ever get out because you don't even know how you did in the first place? That kind of knot.) -
(I even did that, and it still broke.)
"Ok, let's try that," I said, and put it on my back again. It seemed to work pretty well. But after a few feet, I heard the now familiar sound of the bag falling behind me. I started laughing. "This is getting ridiculous." -
"It is," I laughed. "Maybe just carrying it with the lone surviving strap."
-
"That's what I was going to do," I said, as I picked it up. I swung it on my back. I had to hold the surviving strap, though, so that it would stay on my back and not slide down my arm. Then I felt the strap slide quickly though my grasp. I sighed. The other strap had broken. I could see the people taking the videos laughing. I had a slight smirk on my face as I stared down at my bag. I put my hands on my hips. "You know, I don't think it wants to be used," I said.
-
"It appears that way," I turned to see the small crowd of video takers. "You'd think that they had better things to do with their time."
-
"What? Don't you want to be known across the world as the one who helped the girl with the stubborly broken bag?" I asked. I picked it up by the four strings, and swung it on my back. I had to constantly be holding it, otherwise it just wouldn't work. i started walking towards the monument. People started puttig down their phones.
-
"I'd rather not have so much publicity," I grinned. "But sure, why not?"
-
"The largest piece of chalk in the world!" I said, spearing my arms out wide.
