I laughed. "I grew out of children's meals when I was nine," I said.
-
My face became warm. "I grew out of them around then too, but in America it's different, alright?"
-
I looked at Gabrielle. Why was she being so strange about it? I left it alone, and ordered a burger, fries, and a drink.
-
I stuffed myself with food, leaning back against the chair. "Mmmm. Do you eat like this everyday?"
-
"Not everyday," I said. "At least I don't. At home, we have tons of different recipes for different foods. But some people do eat out everyday. My family only eats out for special occasions, and birthdays. Or if we've gotten a gift card for something."
-
"That's pretty much the same as back home for me," I said.
-
"So yeah, it's special when we get to eat out," I said. "But there's one high school in Nebraska. Do not have their food. It's disgusting. For their mac and cheese, you can literally separate the cheese from the noodles. And the chicken nuggets taste like soggy breading. The burgers are like rubber, and they somehow even messed up a casserole. These are like the simplest things you can possibly make , and they messed them up."
-
"Ew," I said, wrinkling my nose. "Have you ever gone there?"
-
"For high school, no," I said. "But for sports camp, yes, for NEHLS day, yes, for the basketball and volleyball tournament, yes, and those are the only events I can think of. I'm glad I'm not going there in the fall. Their sloppy joes at the last basketball tournament were okay, but weren't spiced up very well."
-
I smiled. "'Weren't spiced up'."
-
"Well, I don't say were all seasoned up," I said, rolling my eyes. I had known as soon as the words were out of my mouth that that was what she was going to say. "I kinda think it's funny how every person thinks that a person from another place has an accent, but doesn't think that they have an accent. I have an Omahan accent. Yes, there is a difference. My mom lived in Wisconsin for a long time, so she has a bit of a Wisconsin accent."
-
"I have an accent, but one cannot describe," I said. "So sadly, I have no name for it."
