"Um . . . ok?" Marissa said uncomfortably. She hoped it was quick.
-
The boy practically crawled over to Marissa. His smile began to fade into a look more serious, then he began to lean towards her.
-
Marissa's eyes widened as he leaned closer. When the boy's lips touched hers, she tensed up. After a second or two, she turned her head away. "That's enough," she said.
-
The boy raised his eyebrows and his facial expression had that “okay then” look to it. Ezra took a deep breath in and then out. He seriously doubted that anyone would pick him, but he knew if they did, he had to pick dare. Whether you pick truth or dare probably means a lot to the people in this room right then. It tells them what kind of person you are, and how much you’re willing to sacrifice.
-
Marissa gave a barely noticeable sigh of relief when the boy went back to his spot. Inwardly she was much mire relieved than she showed. She was grateful that no one ad pressed her to do it longer after she pulled away. Especially the boy, as he looked like the kind of person that would do that. She had never been kissed before, and this experience of wasn't a good one.
-
It was Stephanie’s turn to ask someone the big question. Ezra held his head in his hands, knowing no one would ask him anytime soon. Then again, maybe that was a good thing for him.
A few chuckled filled the empty air in the room as Stephanie opened her mouth, “You there,” she was snapping in Ezra’s direction. Someone near him nudged him to get his attention.
“Huh,” he sat up straight this time, startled.
“Truth or dare?” Stephanie asked him, her smirk was incredibly obvious, but it wasn’t as mean as the other girl’s staring.
“Um, dare,” Ezra was shocked. He was fidgeting, twitching, and blushing, all at the same time. -
Marissa saw everybody's faces. They all looked like they were going to dare him to put his own head into a guillotine and let go of the rope himself, causing the blade to plummet down quick as a blink and end his life. Some more so than others, with a certain gleam in their eyes.
-
Stehanie bit her lip as if she was thinking, “I dare you to go out into the woods behind my house. There’s a creek around, further into the woods. Once you find it, jump in, and head back. Your wetness and stench will judge if you completed the dare or not,” Stephanie finished.
Ezra gulped. He never thought of attempting something like that before, and it was getting dark. He looked outside the window then back at Stephanie.
“Oh, and take that girl with you,” Stephanie ordered, pointing at Marissa. -
Marissa's head jerked up. Stephanie wanted her to do yet another dare? Granted it wasn't directly at her, but still . . . "You want me to to it too?" she half asked.
-
“I’m not gonna let this boy go all my himself,” Stephanie replied in a mockingly whiny voice.
Ezra spoke up, “What’s in it for us?”
Stephanie bit her lip again. It must have been a habit of hers. “If you do this, I’ll stop treating you like outcasts,” she says. “I’ll invite you to all these events and I’ll even let you hang around me at school. Deal?”
Ezra sighed, “Deal.” -
"I guess," Marissa said, uncertain. She stood up. "We should do it now. We'll at least be able to get somewhere by nightfall."
-
Ezra couldn’t believe he was doing this. He headed out the back door with Marissa and shut it behind them. They were officially venturing towards their dare. Of course, they could just go home, but Ezra knew that Stephanie would make a humiliation out of them and he especially didn’t want that for Marissa.
Inside, the teenagers attending the party began to bicker about Stephanie’s promise to the two outcasts.
“Don’t worry,” she says. “They won’t make it back alive,” she joked. Stephanie may have been joking, but she could be right with those words. -
The forest was looming towards them. "We should be good on the way back," Marissa said. "Lots of animals hunt by smell, and based on how Stephanie said that we'd stink, we should be fine. But there might not even be any predators in the forest."
-
Ezra squeaked, “What about bears? They’re attracted to everything that stinks!” He shouted, then covered his mouth. He laughed a little, but only because of his fear. Ezra had no idea what was located in these woods. He had no idea what they might find or discover. Since it was almost dark, Ezra reached for his phone and turned on the flashlight. It was almost fully charged, so hopefully it wouldn’t die on them.
-
"Then we can call 9-1-1," Marissa said, shrugging. "We have an emergency, we've been eaten by bears. I don't think it's as bad as Stephanie was making it out to be. She was probably just trying to scare us."
