"I have no idea," Gaynor said. "I'll as them as they come to mind."

"I see," he said. "I am actually quite surprised that you have not asked about the labs. I thought you might have found that intriguing. I suppose I was incorrect."

Or as they're given to me," Gaynor added, smiling.

02084 cracked a smile, before fixing a serious expression on his face. "So, what specifically do you wish to know?"

"Well, what's this lab? I think I heard you mention something about kids in it."

"The labs, specifically The Lab, is a place where DNA is tweaked and changed in a unique manner in order to create powerful things, or creatures. When I was very, very young, I did not have a code. I had a name."

"What was it?" Gaynor asked.

"Um," he said, his face scrunched up in concentration. "It was James."

"And that's why you said that it's easier to call a 02084 rather than a James when you were explaining codes to me," Gaynor said. "I've always liked the name James."

"And it's easier to say than 02084."

"Thank you," he said, embarrassedly. "I was given a code instead, and trained to be a soldier. It had been a while since I'd heard a name before, so I was surprised to hear that you had a name, not a code."

"I honestly don't like my name," Gaynor said.

"Why is this so?" 02084/James (dunno which one I should call him now) said, surprised. "It is a good name."

(Call him James.)
"It sounds odd," Gaynor said. "It actually means white and smooth, but that's not what it wounds like. It sounds more like . . . a dark metal cross. But with a cheerier tone."
(Gaynor is an actual name. I'm using it for a character in one of the books I'm writing.)
