Wren resisted the urge to laugh. She cleared her throat loudly.
"Well, I do. I can teach you, if you'd like," she offered. -
He started fiddling with the fork. "I dont see why you would bother" he said
-
"Well, reading is a wonderful thing! An entire universe is opened up to you when you can read," she stated, pulling out another book. "Here, I'll show you."
She read out the story, which was about an adventurous field mouse that went through several harrowing adventures before finally outwitting the evil rat king and saving her kingdom.
"See, isn't it interesting? There are all sorts of books." -
By the time she was finished reading he had eaten all of the food and was now curled up on the bed in a similar manner as a housecat. "It is...interesting. I guess" he answered eventually
-
"There's all sorts of stories," she said, gesturing to the bookshelf behind her. "Let's start with the alphabet."
She pulled a small book with large letters on them. She set it down in front of him and began to teach. -
His ears perked up and he sat up so he could better see what she was teaching him, his tail curling in his lap
-
"This one is A. And this one is B. And that one is C. And if you make them like this, it spells 'cab', which is a sort of taxi," she explained, tapping each one in turn with her staff to make them float in the air and arrange themselves neatly.
-
Sgrios tilted his head, his four large ears flopping to the side and making him look like a strange kitten
-
She continued to explain the alphabet to Sgrios, pausing briefly to wave her staff and draw things out.
"Everything has a name, and the names are made of letters. It is like a house and its bricks. Once you have the bricks, you can build anything you'd like." -
Sgrios nodded in understanding and flicked his tail "alright
-
"Here are your letters; A, T, and B. Try to make a word with them. A real word."
-
Sgrios frowned slightly and his ears foldes back in thought before he said "bat?
-
"Yes!" Wren said, excited. "You did it, Sgrios!"
Then she wrote it out, and showed it to him. -
Sgrios grinned and looked genuinely happy that he had gotten its right
-
She continued to teach him until the sun was high in the air. Then she realized that she had to make lunch.
"I'll make lunch, just keep practicing, okay? I think you've got it!"
