Snowkit ran around the forest, scenting the air. Yes! She smelled what she was looking for. A squirrel was nibbling a nut, just a few fox lengths ahead of her. Well, quite a lot of fox lengths ahead of her. Snowkit crept forward, but as she was crouching down to pounce, she caught sight of her reflection in a puddle. She was no longer a small, fluffy kit, she was a sleek apprentice or warrior. She could not tell. As she looked, the surface rippled and merged with another cat. They were so close together she could not tell which one was which. She frowned, remembering that face. It was an older version of Thornkit. In her nest, Snowkit's breathing sped up, then calmed down.

Thornkit shuffled. This was a REALLY pretty she-cat. Then he saw her eyes. "Snow-" The older SNowkit blinked. Was she a warrior now?

Snowkit had forgotten all about her prey. She dipped a paw in the puddle, and it made the image shiver. Her paw dropped right through the merged faces of her and Thornkit. Disappointed, she let the water settle back. She had wanted him to really be there. "Thornkit?" she meowed, in case he could here her. No, it would not work. But she had to try.

"Thornkit!" Snowkit yowled. "Thornkit!"

Thornkit smiled. "Snowkit!" His heart jumped in joy.

Snowkit looked for Thornkit. Where was he?

Thornkit opened his eyes. He wailed. No! Snowkit!
