Sillinae NewbieAntonio tilted his head, regarding Lovino for a moment. "I don't know about nicer." Lovino was sharper, prickly maybe, but not mean. "But... I have seen him at games." He thought for a moment, before his brows furrowed slightly. "I've seen you, too, I think. I guess I was too busy to introduce myself." He offered a small smile. Small world, huh. He was interrupted in his thoughts, however, when the teacher walked past, pulling their papers up, and he realized he hadn't finished copying the notes. He reached out to stop her before hesitating, and pulling back. There goes his good score.
-
Lovino rolled his eyes. "No need to spare feelings, none of your stupid friends do. I know I'm not the angel my brother is, and-" he paused when the teacher walked by, falling silent and looking away. Associating with teachers definitely didn't help his image, not that he had a great one in the first place.
-
Sillinae Newbie"No need to spare you...?" Antonio was now even more confused than he had been. He waited for the teacher to go by before continuing. "Spare you from what? What do my friends do?" He watched the teacher sit down at her desk, looking at the sheets as she apparently was letting the class talk. "What do they say?"
-
Lovino mumbled a curse under his breath. With the worksheet gone, he had nothing else to use as a distraction. "...Does it matter? They're just a--holes, especially that blonde pervert and stupid albino." he hissed, glaring at the desk sullenly. There was no way he'd spill his story out to a guy he'd just met. He was even more opposed to the idea because Antonio happened to be best friends with his two least favorite people.
-
Sillinae Newbie"I... I didn't know..." Antonio said slowly. But... he kind of did, didn't he? Although he never participated in it, he saw it happen. They were always fun to hang around with, and were on his team. Antonio paused. "I'll tell them to leave you alone." He said finally. But halfway through his statement there was a small call from the front of the classroom. "Lovino, Antonio, can you come up here please?" s---.
-
"I don't need your help, b------," Lovino retorted angrily. But at the sound of their teacher's voice, he knew he had to calm down. Forcing a polite, indifferent expression, he stood up, setting his books back down on the desk. "Uh, what is it?" He asked, shifting nervously. He couldn't get in trouble with a teacher, Grandpa would kill him! No friends, no girlfriend, no athletic ability, and a poor attitude. School was the only thing he seemed to be good at, the only reason, his grandfather claimed, that he kept Lovino around.
-
Sillinae NewbieAntonio shifted nervously in front of the teacher's desk, waiting for bad news. And it was. For him, at least. She shuffled the papers, before looking up at them. "Antonio... you didn't even finish this worksheet. You are not doing so great in this class." She looked between him and Lovino. "Lovino, don't worry. You've done wonderfully. But I'd like to ask you a favor." She looked back to her papers, and Antonio felt his heart drop to his stomach. No, no, please don't say it... "I'd like you to help Antonio out of class. Just until the end of the unit. You'll receive extra credit for your help." Oh god. Well, now he certainly was embarrassed.
-
"Like...tutor him?" He asked, his voice an octave higher. God, no, even twenty minutes of Antonio had been torture. He made Lovino feel all mixed up, acting all cute and nice in a crowd of jerks. It was just...weird. But there was no getting around it, and he'd never turn down extra credit. "Um, sure, okay." He glanced up at Antonio. "I can stay after school Friday," he said quickly, before rushing to pick up his books and leave, not wanting to spend any more time with the frustratingly kind Spaniard.
-
Sillinae Newbie"I-" Antonio stared at the teacher for a moment. He just managed to catch Lovino's last words at turned to respond, but Lovino had already gathered up his books and left. His sentence dropped off. That would have to work. Lovino seemed hesitant to agree, and Antonio felt a little guilty. Was it because of his friends? He confronted them when he next saw them, at soccer, but they just shrugged him off. "He's lame, Tonio." They said. "There's no point." He frowned. "He's nice!" He protested, but they just laughed at him. Whatever. They hadn't talked to him.
-
Lovino spent the rest of the week dreading Friday afternoon, trying his best to think of anything except for the note of genuine concern in Antonio's voice when he spoke to him, or the way he concentrated so hard on every problem, like it meant life or death.
It wasn't until Thursay morning that anything really bad happened. "Hey, Vargas!" Lovino froze, then quickly kept walking, swearing when the silver-haired soccer player appeared in front of him, glaring. "What, you don't wanna talk to me? I wanna know what you did to Toni, he's been weird ever since Monday, and he keeps talking about you." Lovino blushed, shaking his head. "I-I didn't do anything, I-" Gilbert grunted impatiently, shoving him back into the lockers. "Don't lie. Hey, what's with these lame glasses, huh? They make you look even more pathetic than usual." he snatched them clean off Lovino's face. The Italian glared, trying to snatch them back without dropping his books. "Dammit, Gilbert, stop!" -
Sillinae NewbieGilbert and Francis sent him strange looks on and off all week. Every time he brought up Lovino they brushed him off, telling him it wasn't worth their time, and he wasn't worth Antonio's time either. He disagreed.
It wasn't until Thursday morning that they pushed him over the edge. He was on his way to class when he heard a dull clang of something hitting one of the lockers, and Lovino's voice. Agitated. And... Gilbert's? "When you stop messing with Toni I'll stop." It was. He rounded the corner to see Gilbert cornering Lovino against the lockers, dangling the glasses over him.
"Gil, what the hell?" Gilbert's head shot up at his voice, and his eyes widened in shock, and maybe a little bit of panic. But it quickly turned into a smooth grin. "Just messing with Lovi, here." He said. Lovino looked less than amused. Antonio frowned. "I think he's having less fun than you are, huh? Back off, man. It's not worth it." It's not worth it, it's not worth it. He was using their words, but this time it was true. -
"I-I'm not, dammit, I'm not messing with anybody!" Lovino's face burned, feeling the amused stares of passing students burn into him. At the sound of Antonio's voice, he jumped, not sure if he should be relieved or annoyed. He took Gilbert's moment of distraction to grab his glasses back. "I...I said, I didn't need your help, b------!" he shouted at Antonio, the closest person he could take it out on without getting beat up. He sniffed and pushed past him, hurrying to the bathroom before anyone had a chance to see his red-painted cheeks or tear-filled eyes. God, he hated Gilbert. Francis tried to molest him, and always ended up scaring Lovino, but he never embarrassed him in public like Gilbert did, and he rarely hit him. Though they were both awful. And so was Antonio, because...because...he just was.
-
Sillinae Newbie"Gilbert! I told you to leave him alone!" Antonio protested, glancing at Lovino's retreating form. Gilbert shrugged. "He doesn't matter, Toni. Why should you care?" Antonio scowled. "Why should you always pick on him?" He said, avoiding the question. Gil and Francis messed with lots of people. But Antonio- well, he didn't know him, necessarily. But Lovino was a good guy. Gil opened his mouth to reply, but Antonio turned before could respond, walking back the way he had been going. He was going to be late to math. And... He paused. So would Lovino. He hesitated, before going back, skirting Gilbert and stepping into the bathroom. Lovino was still there.
"Hey. You're gonna be late." -
"I don't f---ing care." Came the bitter reply. Lovino was pressed against the back wall, arms crossed tight over his chest. He glared at the floor, praying that Antonio wouldn't be able to tell he was on the verge of tears. "...Just tell Ms. Smitt I got sick." he added. There was no way he was going to risk having to work with Antonio again, and half the class had probably seen him and Gilbert, and he couldn't face that yet. He bit his lip, mentally cursing when he had to raise his hand to catch a tear.
-
Sillinae Newbie"I..." He couldn't see Lovino's face too well, but he could hear his voice catch slightly when he spoke. He debated what to do, before walking cautiously over to Lovino and sitting next to him against the wall. The bell rang overhead. Antonio stayed silent for a moment. "We're both late now." Antonio said quietly. "So I may as well be late with you, right." Lovino was crying, or he was so close that it didn't matter. But Antonio had a feeling that that was the last thing he should point out. Not sure what to say, he sat silently and wondering if this had been a bad idea.
