How unfair could she be? She was allowed to talk nonstop about her old lover, but when he used one of his to get something for her, she was enraged. He didn't watch as she walked past, and only moved to walk over once she was under the sheets of the bed.
"We're not dating. Neither of us are allowed to. Well, she's allowed to get married, but only to other servants and I... well, you know. There's an agreement between the knights and the servants that we won't tell the king about what everyone's doing. We're basically... a huge group of of horny, repressed people dedicated to collectively breaking the rules." He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, not turning to look at her. "There were a few that I'd regularly meet up with, but lately, I haven't been interested. She's always liked it more than I have. And honestly, I don't have any interest in anything serious with her." -
Octavia scoffed, sitting up, not bothering to hold the blanket to her chest. "So you sleep with anyone who offers? How like a man. Hah." She shook her head, giving him a glare that just dripped with venom. "You're absolutely horrible, and I hope you know that I plan to make the remainder of the time I spend with you a living hell. First off, I'm not leaving this bed again. Not to get dressed, not to bathe, and not to do anything else. And I'm not eating. I'd rather stave than eat something made by the whorish servants in this place. And.. And I'm not cooperating. King wants me to speak to him? Sorry, my guard is a dick and I'm not doing a single thing until he's gone." With that, she plopped back down, pulling the covers over her head. Octavia was an expert at throwing fits, and though she was bluffing, she acted as if she meant it.
-
"
Well, not anyone. I didn't sleep with you. I have standards.I just told you, she wanted it way more than I did. Trust me, I'm not interested in it anymore. But, since you insist..." He got up and walked over to her side of the bed, then pulled down the sheets to her shoulders. He planted a tiny kiss on her cheek. "Talk to you in a few days, Princess."
With that, he retrieved a book from the chest at the end of the bed and returned to his chair to read. -
Octavia ignored him completely, yanking the covers over her head the moment he let them go. It was only a few minutes later when she yanked them off, though, glaring at him. "And another thing. You were right about Harkwell. He's a.. Well, I can't say words like that. It's not right." After admitting that, Octavia fell silent for a long time, almost fifteen minutes. When she spoke again, it was clear that she had calmed down. "Can you go ask abiut my parents? Please?"
-
Rowan sighed, though it was a content one. It sounded like he was forgiven, at least partially. He set aside what he was reading and stood, stretching a bit like a cat. Honestly, he was ready to go back to sleep. He didn't get to sleep for very long, very often. Yawning, he said, "You should get dressed and come with me. You mentioned wanting a book?"
-
"Oh. Yeah, clothes. Hang on." Octavia got up, and went to rind that her riding skirt and her blouse were wet from where water had splashed on them. The dress she had worn the day before was dirty, and, with a sigh, she took the only other item in the trunk out. It was an extremely short dress, though she wouldn't even really call it that. More like a corset with some frills at the bottom. Still, with nothing else to wear, she put it on, finding it hard to breathe in. "Rowan, I need more clothes, as well," She huffed, finally having the thing tied up.
-
"Well," he replied, watching as she tied the dress up, "the only other options are servant clothing or... I guess you could borrow something from me, I f you were willing to wear pants. Which I think you'd like." Rowan could definitely see her wearing pants. He headed out with her, figuring that the guards would have the best information.
-
"Pants would be amazing," She admitted, trying to pull the dress down. Although she didn't care most of the time, Octavia didn't feel like having the guards stare at her body while she tried to get information of her parents. A bit insecure all of a sudden, she moved to walk next to Rowan, pressing close to him, slipping her hand into his.
-
He took Octavia's hand willingly, guessing that she wasn't as comfortable in the dress as she would have suggested. "So, information, book, then pants? After that, I think we should just sleep until the morning." Though guards were up at all hours, it was a little strange that they were searching for information in the earliest hours of the morning. Besides, he rarely got to sleep in for more than a few hours at a time.
-
"Sounds like a fine plan to me," She hummed, keeping her eyes on the floor, blushing despite herself. "Will you share a bed with me? You know, so that you don't have to sleep in that chair. It looked uncomfortable.. And, plus, you'd probably wake up if I tried to move off the bed to leave. Really, it's the best way to keep me from causing trouble," She reasoned, giving him a small, teasing smile. Of course, Octavia was done causing trouble, but she wanted to cuddle more than she was willing to admit.
-
"I seriously doubt that you'd actually want that," he replied, stopping in the doorway to a large hall. A guard, likely almost done with his shift, was posted there. They walked over to him.
"Hey, Charlie. This is Princess Octavia," Rowan said, pausing as the guard bowed before the princess for a moment. "Have you heard about her parents?"
Charlie thought about it for a moment. "Yes, actually. Starting to rebuild. Looking for the princess. The king planned on sending news of her presence in--wait, I'm not supposed to be telling you this."
"It's fine. Thanks Charlie." With that, they hurried off before the guard could regret sharing the information. -
"I would. Like, you take one side, I take the other. We can even put a pillow between us if you like." Octavia didn't tell him, however, that as soon as he was sleep, the pillow would go away. Octavia fell silent at the guard. She felt a wave of relief at hearing that her parents were both alright. As soon as they were out of earshot, she tugged on Rowan's hand. "Do you think.. Do you think the king would let me send them a letter? So that they know I'm okay? And so I can ask of Henry? You don't know him. He's my.. Pretty much a brother, I suppose. It would help with their willingness to corporate if they know I'm being treated well. Can we ask him? Please? Please?"
-
"Uh... if you can wait until tomorrow, I guess. The king's asleep right now. Let's just head to the library, then grab some different clothes for you." He couldn't exactly say no, but it was impossible to do everything exactly when she wanted it. "And are you sure it's me you're worried about? How I sleep?"
-
(So basically Apples to Apples is the less offensive version of Cards Against Humanity?)
Octavia made a noise of pure joy, squeezing his hand. "Thank you." The princess was short, having to almost jog to keep up with him, still pulling her skirt down with one hand. "No. But I feel like you'll be more comfortable that way. Unless you want to cuddle?" -
"I... I think I'm good," he replied, slowing his pace for her. He gestured to a large doorway as the approached it, then led her into it. The library was a massive space, with plenty to read. A lot of the books were one of a few copies total.
