Willace, reassured by the fire demon telling him that the dog wasn't going to hurt him, slowly came down the stairs. "So you're just a dog," he sighed, relieved, walking down to pat the animal on the head. "That's good. Are you going to stay here? With us and the Wizard Pendragon?"
By then, Charles was making his way home, whistling as he walked up towards the hills. -
Dario tilted his head, giving the boy an odd look. "I am not just a dog." He barked, looking up at the boy. "Stay here? Whose us? Who is the Wizard Pendragon?" Dario was very confused, still somewhat convinced that this was a dream.
-
Gilton was about to translate more, but instead he proclaimed, "Charles is on his way," to Willace. The apprentice suddenly remembered that he hadn't finished the spell he'd been assigned yet. Gasping, he ignored the dog, hurrying to the work bench in the front room that was a mess of papers and potions and powders.
A few moments later, the door opened, and in came Charles. He set the groceries down next to the door, and shut it behind him. -
Dario was still very confused about where exactly the voice was coming from. All me knew is that someone was coming, possibly someone that could help him. He followed the boy to the work bench, sitting down on the floor. When the door open, he sprang up, running towards the new person that had just came in. "Can you help me? Pleaseee?" The last word came out more like a whine then a bark, but Dario still hoped he would understand
-
Charles was more than a little confused as to why Willace was calmly working at his bench while a dog was running around the home. "Alroght. Hello," the wizard calmly greeted. He bent down, giving the dog a pat on the head the touch actually sizzled for a moment- he laughed, ruffling the animal's fur. "What have you gotten into? You must be a troublemaking dog, if you've got a spell on you. I wonder what kind it is?" He couldn't tell what kind of magic was on the animal, only that he had a lot of it.
"He won't stop whining," Gilton complained from the hearth. "It's annoying. Under a spell. I don't care what kind." -
Dario had never been pet or had his fur ruffled before, seeing as he had just became a dog, but the affection felt nice. Dario smiled fondly at the man, looking up at him. "I am Dario and I-" He was going to continue and tell the man what had happened, but he wondered if he should just keep it to himself and not tell him he was really a human. That seemed like a nice idea to him, so he went along with it. Dario wagged his tail, still panting slightly from all the running he had done earlier.
-
"Can we keep him? Please?" Willace begged from the bench, turning to give Charles puppy dog eyes. He'd never had a pet before, and this dog didn't seem so bad.
"We'll see. He can stay if he likes," the wizard said, taking his hand off of the dog. He picked the groceries back up, putting the whole basket up on a hook on the wall. The castle was not very organized- it was made entirely out of brick, with paneled wood floors, and while it looked immense on the outside, it was really only made up of about five rooms. So everything that they owned was in the front room, for the most part, besides the bedrooms and the bathroom. -
Dario was pleased that he had a place to stay while he was a dog, but was worried about his family. He really didn't want them to think he had left, as a human, without telling them. Dario knew he couldn't tell anyone what happened so going to visit them was a lost cause. He watched the man as he hung up a basket on a wall. He then turned his attention back to the boy on the bench, running towards him. He stopped in front of the bench and sat down, moving to lick the boy's hand.
-
Willace, feeling sure that Charles was going to let them keep the dog, gave it a grin. "My own dog, that's exciting. We can run on the hills, and take the door to the marshes, and visit Kingsbury as well." He listed off all the things he'd want to do with a dog, as soon as he'd be able to get it a leash.
Charles turned back to the door, but instead of opening it, he turned a knob under it so that a yellow blob was at the top. Then, he opened the door- and outside, instead of the hills, they had opened the door of a house in the middle of the capital city Kingsbury. "I've got business today, Willace. If you would like, the both of you can stay here with Gilton." Gilton grinned in the hearth, turning a yellow shade of hopefullness. -
Dario watched as Charles turned a knob and when he opened the door, the scenery was different. Dario watched with wide eyes. He turned to look at the hearth, while looked like it was grinning. "Please tell me that flame isn't smiling.." He barked, staring at the hearth. Dario felt sick, everything was messed up and weird.
-
The fire demon flared up, to about a foot tall, waving skinny little flame arms at the dog. "Don't bark at me!" It hissed, like it could do anything about it- which it couldn't since Gilton was trapped in that hearth of his. "I'm not just a flame, I'm a demon!"
Charles rolled his eyes at the fire demon, while Willace huffed. "I have to finish this spell. But take the dog with you, to get it fitted for a leash and collar, while you're out." -
Dario was surprised by the flame's reaction, but didn't want to provoke him anymore than he already had. He hated the idea of having to get a leash and a collar, but wanted to go with the man. He ran over to the man's side, sitting down at his feet. He looked up at the man and smiled, really wanting to go with him. He looked back at the flame. "There's not such thing as demons."
-
Gilton crossed his flame arms, hissing his detest at the dog again. "I could fix that curse of your's. Because I'm a demon. But you can do it yourself now." He sunk back to his normal size, hiding under the logs to take a nap.
Charles was already quite tored of the demon's antics for the day, and so he beckoned for the dog to follow him as he stepped out into Kingsbury. Down the road, one where horses pulled ladies in fine hats and quilded carriages, at the end of the lane the shimmering ocean was visible. They were far, far off from Market Chipping by then. -
Dario just decided to ignore the flame as of right now. He followed the man as they stepped out into the capital city. Dario examined everything around him, it was all brand new. He wanted to explore every single part of the capital city, but decided against it since he was following the man. He was surprised to see that the ocean was in view; he had never seen it before in person. People who visited the small hat shop had talked about their travels and how amazing it was to visit the ocean, but Dario had never actually experienced it for himself.
