Alex shifted a little, shrugged, and leaned with his hip against the counter. "It's quick money, and it's not so bad. Actually, it's fun, because all the coworkers are on the same page and, well, dancing is a fun way to work. I just thought I'd enjoy it."
-
August nodded, putting water in the pot before setting it on the stove to boil. He turned back to face him, crossing his arms over his chest. "Does it pay well? I don't see how you can have a steady place to live."
-
Alexander felt a little like he was being interrogated, but maybe then it was just because it was a cop. "Yeah, actually. I work outside of the bar too, and on one of those party trips, I can easily make more than a thousand in half an hour. And in a normal shift, with all the tips, I make about as much in about two hours. But... I don't keep most of it. I help my dad out."
-
He nodded, biting his lip. "Do you have a steady place? You know, because I have to take you home after you eat."
-
"I've got a cash for a hotel tonight," he answered, shrugging. "So if you just drop me off at the Marriot I'll be fine."
-
"That's not what I asked. A hotel isn't a home, kid," He said, frowning at him. Thinking for a moment, weighing the good against the bad, he offered, "You can take the spare room. Just for tonight. Those hotels are s---, and you know it."
-
He was really starting to dislike being referred to as a kid, even if he was considerably younger than the officer. "If you'd be fine with it."
-
"Mhm." The water has started boiling, so he began to break noodles, putting them in the pot.
-
Alexander nodded slowly, then his gaze drifted away from August to look randomly around the house, at least from where he stood.
-
The walls were strewn with a few pictures- One, an older photo of a young August leaning against the side of a horse, a younger boy sitting on the animal. There was another one, of two identical boys petting a puppy. One of August and a women who must have been his ex wife.
-
Alexander looked back at August, feeling curious. "So, were you married before? Or never were?"
-
"Once. I mentioned twins? Yeah. We're divorced now. Have been for a few years," He answered, checking on the chicken.
-
"Oh. Yeah." He nodded again, trying to find some other topic of interest. "And how long have you been a cop?"
-
"Well, a couple years.. The boys are ten? Five. Five years."
-
"Well... This is boring. Sorry. I'm terrible at small talk," he sighed, leaning his back against the counter with his arms crossed. "I'm really sorry you had to meet me by thinking I was a prostitute, but you should know I entirely forgive you. It probably did look like that."
