Coffee is the best way to go.
Yeah, America sounds good. And ohhh, that's interesting.
My boss walked up to me as I locked my car. He grinned, ruffling my hair as he moved to unlock the back door. "Ready for another day of coffee making?" He asked. I smiled, nodding. "Yessir." He opened the door for me and I walked in. On instinct, I went to my space to get my apron while he turned on the lights. Another two employees showed up as I walked out of the changing room. The smell of coffee was really getting to me. I loved it almost as much as I loved the customers. The boss unlocked the front door and switched the sign to "open" as I stepped behind the cash register. -
A bit flustered, but hardly out of breath, I skidded to a halt outside [name of coffee shop]. I glanced to the open sign, looked at my watch again, and pushed the door open. An aromatic breeze hit me: the sharp smell of coffee. I closed my eyes for a second, and followed with a glance around. Not one customer was there. It was in fact, only me. I approached the register uneasily.
-
My attention had moved from the cash register to the turned off machines. I moved away from it, pressing buttons and watching the lights on each machine turn on. I was just turning on the final coffee machine as I heard the familiar whoosh of air come from the front door. My eyes moved from the machine to the person at the door. The first costumer of the morning was there, walking up to the register. My hand slid off of the machine as I wiped some coffee stains off of my hands and went up to the counter. "Good morning, sir. How may I help you?"
-
"Ah..ah... The, uh, the time? Do you have the time.. Ah, miss?" I unbuttoned the top button of my shirt and pulled my tie loose. She'd probably look at me like the others had. I decided to give her a chance. I glanced at my watch again. "Yes. The time, please.
-
A smile took over my lips as the man asked for the time. I could tell that he was trying to get my attention- it was pretty funny, but he definitely knew what would catch my attention. Squinting at the register's tiny screen, the time was on the bottom right corner in red letters: 7:16. "I think it's seven sixteen, A.M. of course. Is that what it says on your watch?"
-
"Oh, ah, yes. That is what it says. Well, that's what it would say. I have my watch set seven minutes late today," I glanced down at her lips, and flashed a smile as well. Just mimic, I thought. "Seven minutes and sixteen seconds to be exact."
-
"Oh? Was there any special occasion for that?" I leaned on the counter, putting my chin in my hand. As long as there wasn't anyone else coming in, I wouldn't have to worry about looking so unprofessional. "Is it an excuse to get to your work late?"
-
"Oh, no, of course not. I think better in numbers than words and time is a concept that is so easy to manipulate. Everyday I set my watch either late or early, to think in a different way. It's quite fun to change something as simple as time... Forgive me. I'm sure you just want my order."
-
I had honestly been interested in what he was saying. However, getting his order didn't sound too bad either. Perhaps.. "I'll take your order, but I'd certainly like to hear more about your theories of time.. What makes it so fun? Can't you change typically anything with that thinking? Applying that idea.. Why time?" I stood up straight, glancing at the door. Still, no one. "What would you like, sir?"
-
"Ah, ah, I don't like coffee. Tea? Do you have tea? And perhaps if you care to hear more, you can come to my office, or we can.. Ah, meet up somewhere? Maybe I could call? You could call..." I looked at my watch in desperation. Still too much time to go, but if I could be any worse at social convention it would be a crime.
-
"Yes, we have some tea. I think the menu is right over there," I gestured to a menu that was covered with words written in different colors. Different types of teas were listed, all at a lower price than the coffee. Again, a smile played on her lips, but this time she acted as if she wasn't amused. "Hmm.. I'll be needing your number for that. Though, if you think the tea here is nice, perhaps you could come by during my break and we talk here. I doubt anyone would mind."
-
I glanced up to the menu, and pointed. "Yeah... Yeah I knew that, of course. Ah, well, just plain, with lemon. No, sugar. And I can give you my number. And I will meet you here. If the tea is brilliant, of course." With determination, I searched for a pen.
-
I wanted to say 'Of course you did', but I held back the words. Instead, I looked at what he was pointing at before listening to him. I typed in his order, barely catching his words. "Ah.. The tea is definitely brilliant, just like the coffee." I moved my hand to the other side of the counter, where a pad and pen was. I slid it over to him, smiling brightly. "When you're done with that, that'll be four dollars and eighty cents."
-
I reciprocated with a smile, took the pen with my left hand and rummaged through my pockets and briefcase with my right. "Four dollars.. I have a five. Actually, how much do you get paid? Is this minimum wage or do you get something decent?"
I slid her the money and gave her the pen and paper back, complete with my number. "Thanks." -
"Unfortunately it's minimum wage, but since we've been getting so many costumers there's a high chance that pay will go up." I took the money, placing it in the register. A coin machine beside it spit out the twenty cents in dimes for him. "You're welcome. Would you like a receipt?" One of the other workers, a short guy with glasses, scooted into the space behind me. He got to work making the tea (I wasn't going to argue with him).
