This can be in the future, now or whatever. So a rather eccentric genius has lived his whole life surrounded by only machines (prefers them much better) until he falls in love. Then something tragic needs to happen like war or whatever and they're seperate and eventually he dies or his love dies during this war.
His interest can be a woman or a man, I'm totally fine with either.
