"W-What's going on..?" Lovino asked in a small voice. "Antonio, what are you doing with my father?" His gaze flew from the raised fist to the antsy elephant to Antonio, looking worried. "What did you do?" he demanded, glaring at his father. Mr. Vargas glared back. "You're not thinking straight, Lovino. Your friend here has been drugging you."
-
Antonio was practically hyperventilating by that point, but he tried to keep his cool. Maybe, just maybe, he thought he could convince Lovino that he'd really been drugging him. Then Lovino, at least, wouldn't be hurt. "I have, I'm so sorry, sir, I'll leave, I'll leave."
-
Lovino looked sharply at Antonio. "Shut up. Don't lie. Papa," he turned back to his father. "You've abandoned me for most of my life. Don't bother coming back if you're just going to disrupt my show and upset my performers."
-
"I-I'm not lying," Antonio said, but this time in a much smaller voice, not so sure his plan would work anymore. Maira had resorted to finally pulling down her trunk, slowly, and it gently began to grab the man's hair- she was simply quite innocently smelling him out.
-
The man jerked away, slapping Maira's trunk away from him with a growl. "Control that damn beast, and explain what the hell is really going on here!" Lovino moved in front of Antonio, glowering at his father. "I..." his glare faltered for just a minute, as he tried to think of something that might work. "...I love him, Papa. I-I told him if he didn't be with me I'd kick him out." The man looked slightly skeptical, but nodded after a moment. "Alright. I knew we made the right choice in leaving you. You've always been pathetic, too stupid to realize how to be a decent person." He stepped forward, raising a fist again. "You're a disappointment."
-
Antonio almost warned Lovino's father not to do that, but really, he hated the man enough not to. Once Lovino was in arm's reach, and his father looked ready to hit him, Antonio pulled Lovino behind him. Meanwhile, Maira had grown clearly protective of the two humans that she cared for. She trumpeted, and wrapped her trunk around Mr. Vargas' arm.
-
Lovino protested as he was pulled away, looking frustrated and nervous. His eyes widened as Maira grabbed Mr. Vargas, who struggled wildly, trying to free his arm, spitting insults at Antonio and Lovino. "Will she really hurt him?" Lovino asked in a small voice. He wouldn't mind, but it would be bad for the circus if word got out that the animals were hurting people.
-
"No, no," Antonio said, watching the female elephant closely. She'd never hurt anyone before, and she was only holding the Vargas man's arm back. "She won't. Lovi, I think we have to leave," he said. But, he couldn't just leave Gorro and Maira out here on their own, or they'd really get mad. "Run back to your carriage and wait for me, I'll handle this."
-
"No, no, what if he hurts you? He believed me, I should stay..." He knew that as soon as he left, Antonio would take the blame, and might get hurt.
-
"Lovino," Antonio breathed, turning to him and smiling slightly. "I have two ten-ton creatures on my side. I'll be fine." He pulled the Italian in for a short hug, then ushered him away.
-
Lovino reluctantly backed away, but rather than go back to his wagon, he ducked behind the tent flap, in case Antonio got into more trouble. Mr. Vargas was still struggling, trying to tug his arm away from Maira and screaming at Antonio about Lovino.
-
Once Antonio thought that Lovino was out of the way of harm, he laid a hand on Maira's leg. She let go of Mr. Vargas, her trunk instead verturing to Antonio pluck gently at his hair. "Sir," Antonio said, "I suggest you leave. You aren't welcome here, and anyone else at the circus would agree." Of course, Toni was lying- plenty of the circus would be glad to see the man back. "And while I might not release my elephants on you, I can't say the same for the new lion trainers. We're all quite fond of Lovino's leadership, and don't want him gone."
-
Mr. Vargas narrowed his eyes. "I don't recall asking you. He's my son. I'll go, I have no desire to stay in this awful place, but I need to speak to him first." He demanded firmly. Lovino stepped back behind the curtain, wondering what on earth his father had left to say to him after all the yelling.
-
"Then I'll go with you," Antonio decided, not trusting Mr. Vargas anywhere near Lovino. He took hold of Maira's trunk as if he were holding her hand, intent on following Mr. Vargas.
-
Lovino popped back out again then, cautiously approaching his father. "Lovino," he sighed, sounding exhausted. "...I don't know what's going on here. I trusted you to run this show and I come back to wild animals and poorly hidden couples." Lovino quickly looked away from Antonio. "I think it's disgusting, but I also don't feel like watching my son get hanged. Just..." he shook his head. "Be careful, idiot." Lovino nodded quietly, biting back any reply he might have. He was going to let them go. Mr. Vargas raised a hand, but this time placed it firmly on Antonio's shoulder. "Protect him." he ordered, before turning and vanishing in the crowd.
