Sorry, it took me a while to post that since I have huge thumbs and am currently on my iPod. As you can tell, by the end of the post I had calmed down a bit.

@Orkimedes You've just made this thread 20% more interesting. XD

I have to agree with Sage on that one lol. I nearly pissed myself laughing.

We aren't that special. We just have a different skill set than other species.
When was the last time you saw a human run over 60MPH?
When was the last time you saw a human bite with the force of over a ton?
When was the last time you saw a human shrug off a bullet?
When was the last time you saw a human get thrown naked into the void of space for 10 days, get back to earth, and then give birth?
The only reason you are claiming we are special is because of the brain. But the brain isn't s--- compared to some of the other things other species are pulling off. Exercise a bit of humility. We are weak, flimsy, virus ridden, hairless, apes who in our lack of physical aptitude had to figure out something else to do to make up for it.
"Since then, have we evolved into any other life form?" Apparently you're excluding homo neanderthal and homo Denisovan. Not to mention homo erectus.
Evolution isn't a spontaneous change. It is gradual. So if we were becoming a different species, we wouldn't even realize it. Consider that when you remember that 2,000 years ago being 5'6" made you a giant.
You also misquoted your "Humans will stop evolving" part. I looked it up. The only reason that they say we might stop evolving is because the pressure isn't there anymore. The idea that only the strongest survive and pass on their genes, isn't applicable anymore because everyone is mating and passing on their genes.
This however does not mean we will stop evolving. Nor have we stopped evolving. It simply means that we don't really have anything exciting to look forward to. More developed wrists and spines to cope with sitting at a computer. Faster learning speeds. The dissapearance of the pinky-toe. That sort of thing is all we have to look forward to. Evolution won't stop. All those scientists are saying is that it's lost motivation.
Further more, you also have failed to grasp the concept of "fear of death". It is not the mortality or the finality that grips some people in fear. I have been legally dead before, and people who are scared of it are psyching themselves out for nothing. Once your muscles start to fail, drowning is very peaceful.
You can deny what I'm about to say all you want, but I do not fear death. I fear not doing enough with my life. I fear being forgotten. Not contributing to the well being of society. Doing so may have no positive contribution to me, I'm dead after all, but doing those things before I die will make the last bit of life just that much more enjoyable. I do not fear death. I fear not living.
And I do take comfort in knowing that I won't exist any longer. It makes this life just that much more special. This existence that much better.
I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant, pathetic, speck of carbon based life, but because of recent advances in medical science I get to live twice as long as my ancestors. Twice the life. Twice the joy and happiness. Twice the cheery debates with theists who just don't get it. Twice the anger and frustration. But no matter what, twice the life.
And I don't have to tell myself that I will exist forever. I'll enjoy this life span. I have no room to be selfish and tell everyone that I will live forever. I have no reason to believe I should. And I wouldn't want to anyway.
And as for what you ended your main rant on, you're right. We do have the right to believe what we want to believe in.
But let me counter that with a personal favorite quote of mine, "A person is smart. People are blind, angry, and ignorant."
So while on a personal level, "Believe what you want" sounds fine and dandy. But it's the harm that it causes on a grander scale that I have a problem with.
It's the history of Nazi Germany, Crusades, Heretic and witch burnings, slavery, Dark ages. It is all those things that make me not want to live in a world with religion.
And yet here is where the problem starts. The only way to influence the mob, is to influence the individual.
I spend my days debating religion and trying to get theists like you to step away from your God, not because I want to keep you from believing in whatever voice in your head you want to believe in; but because every individual I take away from that blind, violent, ignorant mob, makes it that much weaker. And that much more non-existent. -
Orky, you are my favorite person.
-
I was not quoting anything, I was stating my own reason for believing humans won't evolve anymore. I feel as though if we were to evolve any further, due to the technogoly that will probably have been developed by that time humans could stop it. And I wasn't expecting you to look anything up. People usually don't do that when arguing (at least not with me). Thanks for showing that you care enough about the topic to actually do research on it.
And I will never turn from my God. Call me ignorant, stubborn, fool, I don't care. I love my God. I know it sounds stupid and retarded, but I can't help it. I've tried. I've tried to be an atheist. I've tried to not believe. I've tried because I couldn't handle the homophobes or the creationism freaks. I've tried, and I can't. I feel like a part of me is missing whenever I do. My religion is part of who I am. All those things you talked about earlier, those were all started by sick people. So many of those people claimed to be Christian, yet they had no goodness in their hearts. Humanity takes things and twists them into sick, horrific things the even God, at one point, regretted creation. Sometimes I wonder if it was worth it to save Noah to him.
Never did I try to get you to believe what I do. I argued my point, saying that this is what I believe in and why, but I never once said atheists like you are the problem with the world. Never did I call you out and say that you need to believe what I do because you are part of an ignorant mob of people that will cause violent outbreaks around the world. I refuse to walk away from my God. Remember how there is no proof that God exists, but there is no proof that he doesn't either. -
*that even God
-
"even God, at one point, regretted creation. Sometimes I wonder if it was worth it to save Noah to him."
Hold up! So an all loving, all knowing, all powerful deity now has regrets, is second guessing himself, and considered wiping out humanity without a second chance?
That's the kind of stuff that makes it that much harder to believe.
And all those things I mentioned earlier, that you said were all started by sick people, with the exception of Nazi Germany, those were global and widely accepted. Today we consider public executions to be horrible. 400 years ago they were acceptable. 2000 years ago they were regular. Today, it's not that bad to leave the toilet seat up. 500 years from now it may be a federal crime. Who you call sick today, were visionaries and idols for their time. And if you asked any of them... God loved them and agreed with them.
Once again, you're right. You never did call me out for being part of a long history of murderers, rapists, molesters, and extortionists. Mainly because that history is virtually non-existent.
And as for your last sentence, the burden of proof rests on the person making the claim. You are the one claiming there is an all seeing all loving man in the sky. So prove it. Saying, "you can't prove there isn't" is a logical fallacy. And a poor one at that. -
disregard the first two paragraphs. I misread them the first couple times through.
-
Therefore, based off of these ten people, I, a good Christian, must convince as many atheists as possible that they are wrong so that I may slowly take away from the ignorant mob of people who will one day be the end of us all.
Do you see where I'm coming from? -
Dahmer only killed 15 not 17. The first person he killed was on accident, from what I've heard, he was a very lonely person and didn't like when people left. But that's something you could ask Angie about, she knows quite a bit about 'famous' killers.
-
I am personally not familiar with the case, so I'll have to trust you on that.
-
And I noticed that it said everyone is wrong at some point. Therefore, that site could have some very false statements, but you believed it anyway, thinking it was right. Each person determines right and wrong differently.
-
People will always do wrong. That's what it was.
