First of all, I apologize for the long post.
So I've had sleep paralysis since fifth grade. (For those who don't know what that is, it's when your brain wakes up, but your body is asleep. Thus you most likely will hear strange sounds, creatures, shadows etc.) During that time, I underwent research and believed it was because of hallucinations of a false awakening in the REM system. You know, that the vivid feelings and images were truly those of my neurons. This explanation gave me relief, but it didn't abide the paralytic attacks. In fact, they got worse.
[worth the mention] I went to a Christian school, but I admit I belittled and ignored God's teachings. I sinned, I was ignorant and thought the Bible was "uncool". This was during the same era of my sleep paralysis.
One night, I had another episode [Read: sleep paralytic attack]. It was not unfamiliar but nevertheless, I was downright terrified. I couldn't move nor feel my body. Something was pushing down my chest and I felt fingers crawling along my neck. I heard my name being called out continuously. I couldn't open my mouth; my whole body was disabled except for my eyes, which I daren't open (God knows what I'd see). Normally I would wallow in the terror and wait for the episode to pass. But after 2 minutes, the fear became overwhelming and I prayed to Jesus for help. Since it took great effort for me to release even the slightest whimper, I called for Him in my head. And guess what? I woke out of the attack.
So then I started praying a bit and studied the Bible for a bit. Paralytic attacks decreased, but they still came. And whenever they did, I called out for Jesus and the shadows and things would leave and my body would wake up. That was when I began to believe in God's word and stopped thinking of unclean thoughts and actions before bed (you wouldn't believe how many sexual fantasies I've imagined in previous years), and I haven't had sleep paralysis since.
Many people claim that demons are visiting you during sleep paralysis, and I believe that too. Why else would praying help cast them [and the attack] away? -
Placebo.

I have had sleep paralysis since I was six, and what I found out is if you calm down, and stop trying to fight it, you wake up. So when you prayed, it gave you a sense of comfort, calming you down, and then you woke up. Also, as you get older, you have less attacks.
-
Maybe, but I was still pretty freaked out even when I prayed.
-
Yeah, I know. It can get pretty terrifying, like one time I was pulled off of my bed and I heard someone laughing. You just have to remember that it's not real, and it'll be over in a couple of seconds even when it feels like minutes.

There's aaany number of explanations that dont point to divine province. Placebo effect, meditative relaxation, coincidence. ..

I love this thread so much.

Pfft. That doesnt prove the existance of a higher power at all. I get sleep paralysis on a regular basis. All you gotta do is relax and try to wiggle your toes. The more you do that and the more you try youll start gaining back power over your body little by little until it fades.
I remember this one time I was paralyzed and was having a seziure O.O -
I had sleep paralysis once a couple weeks ago... I didnt realize what if was so I shrugged it off and sat up anywau, and it went away

Don't listen to any of these commets about how its just you calming yourself and that there are other ways to shrug it off. Because explain to me this. Why would uttering the name Jesus in your sleep cause demons rebuke? Well I can tell you right now. James 2:19-nkj says, 'You belive that thereis one God. You do well. Even the demons beliveand tremble."
Riptide I have been a born again believer my whole life, and I have seen God work in people many times in lots of ways and have also had many personal experiences that made me the person I am today. And I know that there is a God, thee God that made everything and everyone, and I want you to know that reading your post made me very happy and longing. And that if you should keep going in this direction, that there is a God that demons tremble at the very utterence of his name.
Wendee30. P.S there is a book you should read called the screwtape letters. Mabey you have heard of it, well I think you should read it. It is a very through book writen by a chistian author that I think would would really help you. -
You say dont listen to people who offer other explanation, but tell me why this could not possibly have been the effect of her relaxing, or coincidence?
