Need to move away from religion?
-
Indeed. Religion does more harm than good to a society and its people, I wrote about this before but will have to find the link.

Religion helps to keep peace and give hope.
Religion is not the problem, it is the people. People take religion too far and end being addicted to this "drug"
But really religion benefits society and children's beliefs should not be discouraged or encouraged, leave them as they are, as they get more intelligent and educated they will be able to judge for themselves about what they want to believe in -
Religion is a important part of my life
-
A false "peace," and a false "hope."
In reality, it reinforces "traditions" which are like balls and chains on the feet of its more ardent followers, and is a supporting framework for the hierarchies and old ways which hold society back. It holds progress back, in fact, it distracts us from the issues facing the non-ruling members of society and enforces the rule of the upper class.
Imagine where we could be without religion! -
Religion keeps peace, aren't the Jews and Muslims righting over owns owns Jerusalem. Doesn't sound very peaceful to me
-
well yeah but they're been at it since before religion was invented, they'll be at it long after religion's gone.
I don't think that the presence of religion affects the amount of violence in the world positively or negatively.
On the topic of discriminating on religion, there's SO many examples of it everywhere. It doesn't bother me any more then discremnation on anyone else.
I expect it, and am shocked when a person is not discremanatory in some way. -
Well Hindus and Muslims have been at it because Muslims inspire killing while Hindus are against it and Muslims are allowed to have up to 4 wives at the same time whilst Hindus are allowed 1. Not quite religion based mostly cultural.
I don't know anything about Jews so I have no arguments there.
Religion isn't limiting progress in any way, but I do know there will be high anarchy and ruthlessness WITHOUT religion. Its the fear of a Higher power that keeps us all in check, us God fearing people anyway though some people take it too far, religion shouldn't be used as an excuse that it hinders progress because it never has. The only thing religion counters in terms of science is the Big Bang Theory and The Evolution Theory.
Religion did not create any hierarchies or tradition, keep in mind that they were already there even before religion was actually formed. Religion, in my eyes, was created to limit the populations negative actions that could affect the whole economy such as killings that could reduce production, raping that causes over population, theft bribery and corruption causes loss of valuables and stuff like that and by inserting a fear of a Higher Power into their minds I believe this helped reduce actions like these.
But like all ideas and traditions, it will be altered generation by generation until it is either gone completely or made into a whole new idea hence we will never know for sure if religion has had a negative or positive impact
A "False" peace and "False" hope is better than having nothing at all -
I guess I'm gunna be the one that posts this picture

I don't get the picture...
How did Christianity stop the exploration of the galaxy, the bible doesn't say anything about it being a sin to travel through space, if anything I think He meant for us to travel to space, all the stars and planets weren't created for nothing -
During the Christian dark ages, science was severely oppressed. let's not forget the story of Galileo who believed that the earth revolved around the sun and the church threatened him with death unless he stopped advocating that crazy idea. It wasn't until the renaissance that humanism developed and people started questioning the world ariund them and focused on human everyday things instead of every aspect of their life being religious. This is also where we get the very first glimpse of different churches rising due to the abuses to the Catholic Church.
-
Now Galileo was actually funded quite heavily by the Catholic Church and as a result he had money to do his research and although his findings were crushed, maybe he wouldn't even known about it if he was not supported by the church before his announcement. In other words, not counting the Pope, he was the highest ranked in the Catholic church before his findings..
Let us not forget that the majority of the world wasn't Christian, say China and Japan had their own scientists who were not oppressed by Catholic Churches but they didn't make much of a discovery, why? Lack of technology. Science was not held back by churches, they were held back by lack of technology, they had ideas of what to create but no tools or items on how to create them so probably during the period of the dark ages they were researching better ways of conducting research and better ways of building and moving things as a result their ideas were held back.
Even though "some" science was held back due to religious oppression, I can still bet you we will be at the same technology level as we are in now, religions didn't oppress science as a whole but only those parts that defied their belief's such as the earth being round or how a baby is created in a womb however, I pretty much doubt they held back on their research, I don't see why a Christian Ethnic group would stop a group of scientists from saying they have discovered a new type of metal or they have thought of better ways of traveling, what I think people don't understand is that science at that time was probably all about creating better ways of conducting research before actually making their ideas as a reality.
Let us not forget that in the dark ages, there were also massive changes in the world's climate as well as the fall of the Roman Empire meant that there were now lands available for conquering so science was researching better ways of fighting and better weapons and also new ways to cope with the changes in climate. I hardly see how any religion caused any of these.
If you paid attention in history classes, or haven't reached that level yet, you will know that (off topic but) even Columbus was a very respected member of a Catholic Church though it is quite arguable and some say he was Christian but basically he was religious yet now we all know that we can NOT fall off the earth and the earth is in fact round. Again, a great finding financed by a church.
Also rocket propulsion and the physics of trajectory were in fact found by Christians since Albert Einstein refused to research anything destructive (He was Jewish by the way).
So actually, science actually originated through churches, they were the most educated at that time, you don't just wake up and say you are going to build a factory, at that time the churches were also held responsible for education and indeed research. The science that you so much love was because of educated men taught by the church, funded by the church but sometimes not supported by the church unfortunately.
And still science is being oppressed today by say creationists who still feel Astronomy and space travel is wrong but that is not stopping science, is it? I doubt it was affected much by the oppression -
I'm not necessarily saying the teacher was right to do this, but he might be doing the kid a favor in the long run. If this moves her away from blind faith and towards self-empowerment, then maybe this is a good thing. Of course nowadays you claim discrimination for anything and make a big enough stink that you don't ever have to be told you might be wrong. I don't know, these elementary school role model assignments are kind of dumb anyway. Saying God is your role model is probably more intelligent than saying some celebrity or athlete is your role model, which is probably what all the other kids wrote. I hate how we make kids think they need to look up to or be like somebody else. I wouldn't have even assigned this. I would've asked the kids "what do you like about yourself?"

I'm pretty sure what that teacher did is the exact definition of "forceful twat".
