So Atheists believe that the universe is a billion years old.
But it's 2013.
I get the whole BC/AC, AD, etc., concept, but doesn't that stand for before Christ?
And isn't it just Atheists that believe in this method? Like, don't Christians believe the universe is 2,013 years old?
So why are we taught BC/AC and stuff in history?
Or did I just get all of this mixed up?
I'm confused. -
Actually, the Earth is estimated at 4 billion years old. The universe is...a huge number.
Most Christians I know believe in the "before Christ" because...there were people before Christ, even for them.
I don't know anyone who believes the universe was created when Jesus purportedly lived. -
I'm probably not going to explain it as well as other people might but I'm at least going to try to explain.
We believe that the universe is actually around 4 billion years old (or at least that's what I learned but you can't always trust the history channel). How could Jesus have been born and the people before him to which he had to save if we started our calendars according to his death? By that logic the earth would have to be at /least/ 3,000 years for societies to have formed as well as a language
We are taught that stuff because Jesus wasn't just a man out of no where as well as billions of other people all around the world. It's because there was life before Jesus was born, artifacts dating past his estimated birth and death.
We just use the 2013 because it's already set and common through the world, except North Korea and possibly some other places. Why make another calendar and make everyone confused when we are referring to the date and year. -
Before Christ and After Death (BC/AD) were given as the names of the common era by pope (I think) Gregory the first. The dates were chosen by what he considered the most important point in history from a pope's perspective. The birth of Christ.
Actually, in the scientific community as well as historical community, BC and AD have been changed to BCE and CE for "Before Common Era" and "Common Era". -
So...okay. I guess I kind of get it now.
But don't Christians have a different theory about it or something? Idk -
I explained that too.
-
In North Korea, it's Juche 102.
-
Actually B.C and A.D are something in latin. Well maybe it translates to Before Christ and After Death, I don't know.
-
It's before Christ and (something in latin that translates to after death)
-
Anno domini?
-
No, Christians who strictly follow the Bible would say the universe is 6,000 years old. But there methodology is very unscientific. Fossil records alone indicate that the Earth has been inhabited by life of some kind for much longer.
-
I think the universe is more like 6 billion, thats what they taught in school. And the entire life of the earth is just a snap of your fingers compared to the entire universe.
-
Nobody knows what B.C.E is without looking at Google or ANYTHING.
-
Before Common Era. Yeah, we know what it means. You being ignorant does not mean we're ignorant.
-
I don't know what it is :D
So I Wikipedias it.
