Thread Topic: Some things I don't understand about Christianity...

IceQueen NoviceWhy do Christians think that their religion is right? Why do they try to convert people? Do they not know that Hinduism was made long before Christianity was, therefore their religion wasn't the first? Do they understand that the bible was written by man, and not god? Do they know that whoever wrote the bible might've been mentally unstable?
-
All religions are equally wrong. Except for Scientology, which is in a class of its own as far as bulls--- goes.
-
a better question is why do you maintain that they're not right?
granted, I'm all for leaving each other the hell alone, and Christianity is inherently against that type of peace, but the amount of presumption in statement-questions like this is mind blowing.
First, the precept of faith is basically invincible.
It's a position that cannot be argued down.
That's number 1 line of defense for christian belief.
You probably know this, and if that's the case then pressuring the religion in this way in of itself would be annoying.
Second, your knowledge base is obviously very restricted; as evidenced by you're meandering questions, lack of point and general falsity in your last sentence.
To be clear on that last point: The bible is currently thought to have had many authors, and many more editors, and while the content of the bible may seem loopy by our standards, the fact that in most cases the authors probably intended to reveal truths through fictional stories a.k.a. fables, AND the cultures of the individuals have to be taken into account before you-who's probably never cracked a psychology book- labels them mentally ill.
Third, given the factual and logical errors in your thesis, it's reasonable to assume your thoughts are not operating on historical or social perspective. So let me explain to you that your opinion is no more valid factually then the opinion of the Christians you admonish as wrong.
You're taking the word of people around you that they(Christians) are in fact wrong when you don't know what they're talking about, which is obviously hypocrisy.
There's nothing that bugs me more then a hypocrite. -
I'll also add that while you may or may not be wrong about the "truth" of the universe, IF you got it right, it was only through lucky guesswork.
And take it from a real thinker, you only have about as much chance of getting it right as a termite. -
IceQueen NoviceI maintain that they're not right because of the fictional stories. Fiction means fake. So, I'm suppose to believe that a virgin had a baby? And that on Noah's Ark, the lions and leopards and wolves, and other animals like them, didn't kill any other animal? Also that we all came from just two people?
How is my knowledge base so obviously constricted?
The bible was at first written by one man. Then others came and rewrote it. So, if that first person was mentally unstable, then those people just took the bible to their editors and had it published again.
Where are the logical errors in my questions? Christians do try to convert people, Hinduism was made long before Christianity, the bible was written by man and not god, and it might've been possible that the person who wrote the bible could've been mentally unstable.
How am I being a hypocrite? I can call Christians hypocrites because if we really came from two people, then there would've been incest. And the bible says that no one should have sexual relations with their siblings, parents, ect... So, it was okay back then and no one seemed to judge it, but now it's a horrible sin. (And I do not believe that this is right. I think it's absolutely terrible).
When did I ever say that I knew the truth about the universe?
Oh sorry, I didn't realize that you're a "real" thinker, and I'm not. -
I don't think my religion is correct. But I believe in it. Partially. Most people these days,in the Christian religion, are rather closed-minded. I'm not. I believe in anything and everything. Tell me there's Greek Gods and Goddesses? I'll consider the possibility. Tell me God is just a spirit like us? I'll take that into consideration too. I don't correct people on what they believe. Because you only know when your life is over what's true. That's the only possible way. Life isn't an open book. It's not meant to be told immediately. That's all. Nothing is right and nothing is wrong. That's what I believe. I believe in what I want. Not what a religion tells me. I think religions should be for setting a base for what you believe. Not to be what you believe. It's kind of ridiculous...

@icequeen
more evidence that you have no idea what you're talking about.
About the bible: The precursor to the bible was no written by one man, and if there was an original bible it was also not written by one man, since the christian religion was basically invented in a day...unless you count the evolution of Judaism and kabala but whatever.
About the mental illness: again, you absolutely ignored what I said in my post and restated irreverent allegations in the exact same manner.
Number one, you couldn't know the mental health of a man thousands of years old because you have no physiological training, and have no knowledge of the cultural norm.
FURTHERMORE, you have no idea who wrote what so how could you accuse anybody of anything??
AND the stories that eventually comprised the bible were probably not meant to be taken literally.
About logical errors: on top of the previously mentioned errors, you are now guilty of trying to argue with me before understanding or PROBABLY even most of what I said.
About hypocrisy: I didn't call you a hypocrite. I said you made a hypocritical statement. The hypocorcy is that given you have no knowledge of what you're talking about, you have no more empirical evidence then Christians. and in that case, you have no real reason other then what people have told you to believe Christianity is make believe. that IS hypocrisy.
and I'm not even going to go into the garden of eden with you.
finally: I never said I was a great thinker or that you weren't. I was paraphrasing skyrim. -
1.) Christians believe that God influenced many people to write the Bible through Divine Revelation.
2.) Many Christians do try to convert people to their religion, but so do people in every other religion. Even some atheists try to "convert" theists. Not just Christians. If you pay attention, it's seen mostly in Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. Even we Catholics find them annoying.
3.) The Bible does have a lot of symbolism in it. I know that Catholics are free to interpret what is symbolic & what is real. I personally believe that most, if not all, of the Bible is symbolic.
4.) Don't be a hypocrite. I can't stand anyone who is going to argue that they're right and everyone else is wrong. I'll admit it, I used to be one of those people. Now, although I technically am Catholic, I prefer to say that I belong to a religion called No f---s Given. You see, in this religion, you can believe whatever the f--- you want. You could even be an atheist. All it really means is that you don't give a f--- about what other people believe, mainly, because it's not you. No one should give a f--- about what others believe. Everyone is right in some way.

@IceQueen:
I'll answer the questions I can answer confidently. I will answer honestly and give my view. I will not speek for other Christians, only myself :)
- I believe my religion is correct. Historical documents and the bible support my way of thinking.
- I tell people about God because it's wonderful news and it would be selfish of me to keep it to myself.
- The bible was written by many people, not one. I believe God spoke to the people so they would know what to say. -
I don't need any proof that Christianity is correct. But I believe.
