tongue NewbieOur welfare system would work alot better if it actually rewarded people who work. The problem is that welfare in our country is there more for those who don't have jobs as a safety net. That's all fine and dandy, but how do you expect someone to get a low-level job when they'd be making the same wage that they could simply collect from welfare? I believe that most people who are on welfare would prefer not be there because it isn't a permanant flow of cash, but our system only seems to encourage the deadbeat bottomfeeders on welfare. If we want welfare to work, it shouldn't just be something available for those without jobs- it also needs to reward the people who do want to work. There needs to be that incentive for people to work. This is the way welfare works in other countries like Canada.
Despite the completely unflawed logic of this argument, I doubt the welfare haters on the right would line up in favor of my idea. The obvious reason is that it would cost more money, despite the fact that it's money being spent well. And ultimately conservatives don't see poverty as a problem, certainly not one they want to solve. -
Demonjoe NoviceThat's makes sense. We can't go around rewarding bottomfeeders who want welfare but don't want to work.

tongue NewbieThe Left really needs to adapt my idea, because whether it's true or not, the talking point of "most people on welfare want real jobs" is not good policy. And quite frankly, in a system so heavily based on need and not enough on work, what unemployed welfare recipient would want a real job? I've changed my thoughts a little bit there- it's not a good idea to mindlessly absorb the talking points of whatever side you're on, liberal or conservative.

have either of yall actually needed welfare assistance? just a question

Well there are some middle class homeless people in huge numbers (more than 3 million people) and they only get paid $24,000 a year which isn't enough to pay bills for house costs, utilities, etc. I say we should make an area of very cheap houses, designed for homless with jobs, so they can pay housing bills while saving money to get back on their feet.
-
tongue NewbieI don't think my family has ever needed welfare. That's not to say I'm well off- I was raised by a single mom who works in the NY bureacracy, and at one time we weren't doing so hot economically.
-
tongue NewbieI agree with you Bambi- I think the issue of homelessness in America needs to be addressed. No one is willing to take that stand unfortunetaly because it's going to be more money the government has to spend. Of course if I ran welfare we'd be spending less money on it in the future because people would actually get off welfare.
-
the problem with the homeless people isn't that they can't get on there feet-they could...but most of them living on the street are there because there kind of resigned from life...i used to know a bunch of them in texas,..
-
tongue NewbieI'd say most homeless people are mentally ill or addicted to drugs or alcohol, so that's where we need to devote our attention in helping the homeless.
-
Spend less money on single mothers and whatnot and spend it more on the homeless. The cost of living has gone up way too much and everyone's feeling it. I think it needs to be lower to let people get back on their feet then if they want to they can raise it less significantly.
-
tongue NewbieI say we spend money on both and reduce our miliary budget by 50% and end all major combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
