child labor meaning what?
A kid working the chash register at his parents place, or a 16 year old getting a summer job? or forcing minors to work at something against their will? -
This gonna sound a little callous, and there's a good chance I'm going to go backsies on this opinion at some point, but here is my thoughts regarding child labor.
My assumption is that we are talking about the kind of child labor that exists in sweatshops in places like Vietnam and Honduras. This is something I would never want to see in my country. But it needs to be understood that many cultures do not have the idyllic view of childhood that we do, and that child labor was common in these places even before Western consumption created a great demand for this kind of labor. Frankly, my mindset is that I don't care what happens in another country, especially when those cultures are complicit in their own suffering. As far as what our government's response should be, I think it should be minimal. The people should be allowed to make their own choice as to whether or not they support sweatshop labor in the Third World. The American people not only willingly support sweatshop labor in their purchases, they do so happily and without reservation. Cheap labor means cheap goods. That doesn't help Cambodia or Laos much, but it helps us a lot. -
