Thread Topic: Arizona hates Latinos!

tongue NewbieArizona recently passed a law that will basically allow racial profiling in rounding up illegal immigrants, and it's weighing heavily on my mind. This might not be as big of an issue if Arizona didn't have such a large population of Latinos, many who came here legally or who were born here. To paint with a broad brush and suspect these people of being illegal immigrants(or treating them as suspects rather) is to treat them as outsiders in their own country, and that's wrong. There are better ways of fighting illegal immigration- better border security, workplace roundups- besides profiling.

so they dont like latinos? that sux im a latina chic sassy not baad
-
Demonjoe NoviceActually the bill prohibits racial discrimination, at least that's what one of the state senators from Arizona said on Your World with Neil Cavuto in an interview.
-
tongue NewbieI'm not sure how that could be possible, Joe. The law specifically says that a police officer can card anyone that they suspect is an illegal immigrant, which would inevitably lead to racial profiling.
Actually Sassy, I'm not really accusing anyone of racism, at least not blatant racism.
Another thing that annoys me about this new is that all Latinos are now going to have to carry a birth certificate and other documents with them wherever they go, the same way free blacks had to until the Emancipation Proclaimation and the same way black South Africans had to under Apartheid. No one else except Latinos will have to carry papers because only Latinos are going to be under suspicion. They're being singled out. That's the very definition of profiling and fits pretty well into a definition of racism.
Luckily this doesn't effect me, but as a white male I'm in a position of power in society that I can use to either (1) serve my own desires or (2) fight for those who aren't as lucky as me. I choose the latter. -
It's funny. Conservatives are always talking about how the liberals want to get rid of human rights, but they just made it perfectly legal for police to ask anyone for their 'papers'.
-
Demonjoe NoviceWhat rights do conservatives say the liberals want to take away?
-
blah blah blah politics.... but racism is the WORST by faaaar...
-
tongue NewbieConservatives have been railing against Obama saying that he's engineering a socialist takeover since he took office.
-
Peter Principle NoviceArizona is nearly 1/3rd hispanic in population. Politically-speaking, this is only going to drive the hispanic vote further toward the Democratic party.
-
God, why you orignizing people according to their race.
-
Demonjoe NoviceHikaru has got a point there. We shouldn't be grouping people by race, sex, or sexual orientation, Americans are Americans. I also don't like how every politician keeps trying to appeal to every minority to get political points, if a politican runs on prinicple and isn't corrupt (or good at hiding it) he or she is sure to have a good chance, provided you're not in an extremely red district and you are running as a liberal, or vice-versa.

I know, like what if there is a Latino and they worked hard to get citizenship, and then all these people are like doing nothing by crossing he border, and they think they should have to get citezenship too.
-
if u ask me ppl we shouldent care bout are race we are all ppl its not are fault of wat culture we were born in
anyways we should be proud of wat races are we and respect others -
tongue NewbieIt's generally a good idea as far as campaigning goes to reach out to voters that no one else bothers to reach for. Democrats win elections this way alot- their constituency is very strong among women and minorities and has been since Kennedy's election since 1960. It's good campaigning, really, and the Republicans wouldn't have any chance at building that kind of constituency because their policy stances don't appeal to those groups. Latinos had been big GOP supporters during the Bush years, but the fight over immigration has shifted the community towards the Democrats.

Oh well, if they were immigrants from Mexico they could always get in via a suitcase.
