  Update on this topic: Arizona governor Jan Brewer says that most illegal immigrants are drug smugglers. This is further example that all racism stems from ignorance, and when ignorance reigns you see laws such as SB 1070 get passed.

  Now that this topic is active again I feel that I should mention that there is an amendment in the bill prohibiting race as a reason for suspicion so a cop can't just walk up to you and ask you for your papers. you have to be doing something illegal already like speeding.

  Unfortunately that really isn't the case, Joe. The law is as written that an officer of the law may ask anyone they suspect to be an illegal immigrant for their identification. Nowhere does it say that the person questioned already has to be doing something illegal. It would actually be a fair law if that were the case, but the white lawmakers of Arizona isn't interested in fairness. They're interseted in rounding up every last illegal, and they don't care one iota about the people they alienate doing so. Saying that race won't be a reason for suspicion is simply window dressing that Arizona used to make people think they aren't a bunch of racist pricks. This law inherently calls for racial profiling if it is going to be enforced. There are better ways of catching illegal immigrants than racial profiling, and Arizona's law is a strong indication of their government's veiw of race.

  @ Demonjoe: I almost feel like you're side-stepping the issue here. If you do comment again, I just want to say that I have no intention of calling you a racist if you say you support this bill or support profiling.
  As a matter of consistency, I want to backtrack a bit on calling Arizona lawmakers and residents racist. I do think there are some deep-seeded hostilities at work in this law, and many residents of AZ probably do hate Mexicans whether or not they are legal, but I have been a little too agitprop on the subject.
