"Hey, Lucas my son!" The father smiled, and they both hugged in greeting. "Dad! You're back!" "Of course! I couldn't abandon my family any longer, especially for the holidays!" For while after they all talked and caught up, his dad telling many stories of his time away. Finally, as it was right before dinner, Lucas decided to ask what he had been waiting to ask for a while.
"Um, father, can I ask you about something important?" "What is it, son?" "I have a friend and... he's really poor. He doesn't have any family and can barely make it on his own. I really want to help him so...please dad? Can he stay hear with us? He's really kind and won't cause any trouble at all." His father smiled and nodded. "I don't see why not then! We have plenty of room for guests."
The mother, however, didn't look as sold on this. She kept asking questions of how Lucas met him and how he could be sure he could trust him. His father managed to eventually put her mind to rest, for now at least. Lucas was so happy he couldn't wait to go tell Wesley the news. -
Wesley was still tired, so he curled up in a ball, so he could stay warm, and rested. It wasn't long before he fell asleep. He dreamed of what it was like to live in a house, and sleep in an actual bed.
-
His parents said they would go in town the next day to bring him to the house. Lucas went to bed, barely being able to fall asleep since he had so much on his mind. When he finally did, he dreamt of how warm and happy the house would soon feel, not cold and empty like it used to feel.
When he woke up he quickly dressed and went to the carriage again, this time with his father. They rode back to town again. -
Wesley had slept halfway through the night, waking up when he had a nightmare about his parents. He had wandered around for a long time, managing to steal a whole loaf of bread just as dawn came up. He went back to his alley and had a fourth of the loaf with an apple.
-
When they reached town, Lucas got out and went to find Wesley again. When he saw him, he ran up to him happily. "Wesley! My dad's home, so we've come to get you!"
-
Wesley looked up. "Really?!" he asked, standing up.
-
Lucas nodded and grinned. "Fresh clothes, bed, everything. I'm so happy, I really didn't want you to be out here any longer, the cold and wind and such."
-
Wesley was so happy he couldn't even form words. He just hugged Lucas as tight as he could.
-
Lucas hugged him back, softly resting his head on his friend's shoulder. The contact was very close but it didn't bother him. He felt safe and content there. After a moment he looked back to him with a smile. "My dad's just waiting around the corner. Are you ready?"
-
(*eats popcorn while holding a sock monkey* SO GOOD!)
-
Wesley took a deep breath. "Umm, yeah, but I need to get something." he walked over to the corner of the alley and took out a couple bricks and pulled out the sack he had his possessions in. "Now I'm ready." he didn't even bother to think about his clothes or his appearance or anything.
-
Lucas nodded, waving him over to follow him. He met back with his dad at the carriage, smiling and introducing them. "Dad, this is Wesley, my friend." "Nice to meet you, Wesley." The nice man smiled and held his hand out to shake the boy's hand. "We'll be home soon and you can get cleaned up and have a proper meal, alright?"
-
Wesley shook the man's hand gently and nodded. He was surprisingly shy, now that he was in the presence of a rich adult. He didn't really know what to do.
-
Lucas climbed inside, holding his hand out to help Wesley in as well. "Right, everyone ready to go then." The father lead the horses to go back down the path to the mansion. He hummed an old Dutch song as they went.
Lucas chuckled. "Father's really nice, he may be a bit talkative sometimes, but nice overall. My mother is...kind of the opposite, though," The blonde thought aloud, sighing softly. "She's driven a lot by her fears and anxieties." -
Wesley nodded, but stayed silent the whole ride. The carriage was the fanciest thing he had ever touched. The seats were so soft.
