The crows stared down from the trees and the sky, cawing. One sat on one of the stones and stared at the freshly laid soil, covering the body. A family stood next to the soil. The crow cawed again and flew away. The tall, thin girl with black hair and pale skin glanced at it. She stood up and walked away from the stone she’d been sitting on.
“Why are you all so upset? Just a person; just a month.†She crossed her arms and stared at the family. The little boy, who was actually older than she was, stared up at her.
“You might not understand it, but I wouldn’t expect you to. You’re only a day old.†He frowned. The girl glared at him walked away. It was supposed to be a cemetery. The stones were supposed to be something they’d called headstones on the Mainland, back when the first Singulars were placed here. They’d taken that tradition from the Mainland when they’d been banished for their freakish month-long lives. -
