The kid looked ready to blow up.
"We're gonna have to take her.. it would seem that Mr. Igrit was the only one that lived here beside her.. Hey, kid where's your mother?" she asked.
The child glared at her. "She's dead. Too bad you didn't get to kill her, huh?" she hissed.
Sulfur looked at Gemma. "We taking her with us or what?" she whispered so the girl couldn't hear. -
"I think we have to... that or kill her. I don't wanna kill a little kid." I looked back to the girl.
-
"Alright then! It's settled!"
She smiled at the girl.
"Hey kid- if you really want to kill us, you should come with us. I mean, think about it! When we leave today, we're probably never coming back anywhere around here! you'll never see us again, even after you've learned to use a gun! We can even teach you how to do it." she offered.
The girl glared at her. "Stop making fun of me!" she yelled.
Sulfur widened her shining yellow eyes. "Making fun of you? Am I making fun of her, Gemma?" -
"She isn't making fun of you. When you think about it, what she said actually makes sense. Where would you learn to use a gun? And if you learned, how would you find us?
-
The girl stared stubbornly at Gemma.
"I'll teach myself." she said.
"And do you suppose the orphanage will let you go on a little expedition away to find us?" Sulfur asked, hating saying something so heartless to her.
The girl's eyes grew wide. "Orphanage?" she whimpered.
"Well, of course. Both of your parents are dead." Sulfur explained. -
"You couldn't find a gun in an orphanage, either. So, it's either us or..." I paused, trying to think of a orphanage name. "Saint Mary's Home for Girls."
(I think that's an actual place...) -
You make it sound as though it's an easy desicion. Assassins who murdered my father, or an orphanage. Sulfur thought.
The girl stared at the floor for a long moment.
"Fine." she muttered. "But I'm only coming so I can kill you! she added.
"Fine by me." Sulfur purred. -
"I don't care if you do." I smiled a bit at the girl.
-
Sulfur snapped to attention at the sound of men parading up the stairs. There were shouts from the floor below.
"Up there!" "Come on!"
She quickly grabbed the girl and bolted for the window.
The kid screamed loudly as she opened it up and stepped carefully onto the edge. -
I followed Sulfur.
-
Sulfur was nearly deafened by the screaming of the girl as she jumped from roof to roof and left the estate far behind. She didn't stop moving until she landed on the roof of a far off market. She set the girl lightly on her feet, catching her breath and spending a little more time to complain about the hole in her shoulder.
"I did stop bleeding, but carrying the kid around like that reopened it." she whined.
"Stop calling me that! My name is not "The Kid"! " she snapped. "My name is Ren, and don't call me anything but Ren!" she scolded.
Whoa. Kids got guts. Sulfur thought. -
"Fine, I'll carry the, I mean, Ren." I looked at Ren and lifted her up.
-
"Wait!! I wanna get something to eat." Sulfur moaned.
Ren glared at her. "How can you be hungry after what you just did?" she yelled, revolted.
"Well I haven't eaten in hours!" Sulfur defended herself. "Anyway, that's why I stopped on a market." -
I put Ren back down. I looked down at the market. "You two can go, I want to tinker with my robot some more."
-
"Robot?" Sulfur asked, beofre deciding that it was a bad idea to ask. She grabbed Ren and jumped down into the parking lot.
"Go find something to eat." She instructed Ren. The girl glared at her a little more, then walked off.
Sulfur walked to the Deli and asked if they had and salmon.
"Sure, how much, kid?" the clerk asked, unintentionally causing Sulfur to stop herself from shooting him.
"A lot." she replied.
He measured out "a lot" of fish, wrapped it, and handed it to her. She gave him the money, and went to find Ren.
Ren had turned out to be right beside her, asking for a meat sandwich, which reminded Sulfur to get something for Gemma. She bought a second meat sandwich, paid for both, and left. The two rejoined Gemma on the roof, where they found her playing with a strange robotic thing.
Sulfur handed her the second sandwich. "Nice robot." she said casually.
