Neopronouns don't make sense to me. Pronouns exist, functionally, to be a simplified way of referring to people so that you're not using individual names. If everyone has different pronouns, that defeats the purpose of them.
I'm not saying they're invalid, nor do I mean any disrespect towards people who use them. I just don't get it.
Can someone help me understand? -
for me, pronouns are all about expressing myself and feeling comfortable in my body. when someone uses a word or pronoun for me that i like, it makes me feel validated and respected.
-
I get using them within a friend group, but it becomes a different problem from me when expected to remember the complex pronouns of every person I meet.
-
Nobody is expecting you to be perfect. People expect you to be respectful, and at least try
-
The more you use them, the easier it gets too
-
yeah exactly, and people mess up sometimes, but it just matters that you're trying
-
Even if I were to try to use them in order to keep those around me comfortable, I still don't understand them.
-
Agreed.

What's the point??? -
You don't need to understand them to respect them.
It isn't a matter of comfort for you, or the other person. It's a matter of respect. -
Basically, if you won't even try to use someone's correct pronouns, it just shows you're an a--hole lol
-
I just think neopronouns defeat the purpose of pronouns.
I still intend to respect everyone and their chosen identities, but try as I might I just can't wrap my head around them. I've watched a lot of videos and done a bit of research trying to gain more information on them but I still just can't get over the fact that functionally they don't work.
Obviously it's a personal problem. I cringe at my own inability to make sense of them. But I look at it the way I look at everything else, it doesn't hurt me so why should I care? And I wouldn't want to hurt someone else by not respecting their identity. -
The point is that it makes us feel valid and respected. It's not about "comfort". It's human decency.
Ravenger, stop talking if you're going to be disrespectful. There's a point to neos.
I use four neos, but I don't expect people to use them constantly because my most preferred pronouns are They/Them. Some people are different, though. -
But if each person has custom pronouns, it defeats the entire point of pronouns. That's my hang up.
-
Alright, I'll hop in on this. I think pronouns function in a similar way to names. Some names are a little difficult to remember, like neopronouns, but they're still that person's name, so if you want to talk to them, you should probably try to make an effort to remember their name.
Like pronouns, a lot of people have several different nicknames they can go by, some easier to use. I hope this makes sense? -
It only doesn't because pronouns exist so that you're not calling someone by their name every single time you refer to them.
