Finally saw Joker. First reaction:
Wow
First off, Joaquin Phoenix absolutely NAILED the role. Great to watch throughout the entire movie. One of the most interesting things about this movie is that they take a character known for being pure evil, and they humanize him. You want to root for Arthur while being terrified of him.
Next, the musical score is soooooo darn good. Fits the music perfectly. Its chilling and sets the tone throughout the entire movie.
The cinematography is also great. From establishing shots of the city, to shots of subways and alleys, it paints an amazing picture of a run down city.
One of the biggest takeaways from the film is how graphic the violence is, and how insane the story is. But even with those in play, I cannot reccomend this movie enough. Its amazing. -
The only thing I wish they did was be less explicit. It's like they spelt put every plot point because they we're afraidthe audience wouldn't get it. Let them not get it!! Be subtle, be artistic, let it confuse the audience a little. Every time they felt the need to spell things out that were already laid out through the story, it took me out of the immersion a bit. I wish they had let audiences intrepret themselves instead of holding their hand through each story beat. It's the policy of show and don't tell. If those parts were changed, the movie could easily go from a good movie to a modern masterpiece.

^ completely agree with you bru

I agree with that in a lot of aspects but another thing is that Arthur's credibility is almost non existent, which the director himself even hinted to. A story is essentially fleshed out in front of you, but said events can be taken either way. Take in point Arthur's interactions with Sophie. Nearly everything that happened between them didn't actually happen, as shown in flashbacks when he was in her apartment. So, who's to say that the poor people, the "clowns," actually worshiped him, praised him?
That's my interpretation at least. His story wasn't seen or told from another's point of view -
Yep

That's the thing, they didnt need to show us it wasn't real in such an explicit manner. They should have done it more subtly, more intelligently, so you're left wondering if it's real instead of knowing for sure because of some flashbacks. They could have gone a bit Donnie Darko with it which would not only have made for a better film but also would have played into Arthur's mental state and make the audience feel a similar sense of disorientation and confusion. But they decided to play it safe which I believe was the wrong choice from an artistic standpoint. They sacrificed artistry for financial security, which is as understandable as it is disappointing.

I see where you're coming from.

Another thing I applaud the film music wise besides the composed score is the songs they picked for it, like "That's Life"
It reflects Arthur's story
"I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate
A poet, a pawn and a king"
Pauper- a pauper is a poor person. Arthur and his mother lived in the most poor, most dangerous part of town. He used all his money to ensure his mom was happy and healthy
Puppet/Pawn- Controlled by society. Controlled by everyone due to where he came from, where he stood class wise, because if his mental health he was pushed around, etc.
Poet- he became a symbol for poor people when he murdered the three Wayne employees. A symbol of f---ed up "poetic" justice.
King- Joker. The clown prince of crime. Worshiped by the other poor people, the "clowns"
