Thread Topic: Tips on singing

SilverBlueMoon NoviceAbout a week ago, I recorded myself singing an Avril Lavinge song on my cell phone, and wow...I had no idea I was that bad.
Does anyone know how you can control your voice to keep it from jumping from pitch to pitch and missing notes? Would it help if I sang louder? Becuase I barely whisper when I sing.
I love singing, and I truly want to go somewhere with my music, but the truth is that I suck. I spend hours writing song lyrics each day and singing along to lyric videos on youtube, but how can I improve? -
Smoke and drink a lot.
-
lol just kidding that's really dammages your voice.

Don't have dairy twenty four hours before (if you have a performance or something) because it will give your throat a mucus feeling that makes your voice weird. (Personal experience and told from teacher) other than that practice.
-
SilverBlueMoon NoviceI didn't know that whole dairy thing. I suppose that explains my voice then, given how I must consume gallons of milk every day.
-
Drink water before the song, during pauses, and after the song.
Always warm up your vocal cord. -
SilverBlueMoon NoviceHow exactly do you warm up your vocal cords? (I am so ignorant...but I haven't had an actual music class in four years, since I finished elementary school)
-
It's not just your voice, it could be the quality of your phone's recording device: I recorded myself on mine and I sounded like a kid. When I did it professionally, I sounded the same I did when I sung live.
Drink water 12 hours before a performance. Your vocal cords are the last of the body to be hydrated, so it takes 12 hours to get there. Drinking water before a performance won't help. -
The most important thing to do is sing from your diaphram and not your throat. Also don't push out the sound with your vocal chords. I would also suggest taking lessons or singing in a choir at school if possible. Singing is a lot like playing an instrument, so it helps to go to someone who knows alot about the instrument if you want to use it better. Vocals are basically the same as guitar or piano or anything else in that capacity.
-
SilverBlueMoon NoviceWhile that makes perfet sense, how do you make the sound come out of your diaphram?
And I cannot join a choir at school because it is an art school, and you have to major in music to get any of those lessons. (I'm a visual artist, myself.) -
Apple_pie145 NewbieStand up or keep your back straight, your right foot slightly in front of the left and keep your shoulders back a little, and you can sing loud and clear. It worked for me ;)
-
My music teacher said to breath through your stomach/ diaphragm, sing louder (to me I'm shy), and make I'd with your mouth.... It works
-
Warm up before performing. Not RIGHT before. But just like, 30 minutes or something...
-
SilverBlueMoon NoviceWell, today, I showed my friend a song that I'd written. I recorded myself singing it. I thought she would kill me for forcing her to listen to cr@p, but instead, she freaked out and started fangirling about how good I am. She foreced others to listen to it, and they reacted the same way.
Consider, this is an Art School, where a fourth of the students study music (and are the best in the state.
I'm not sure what to believe. At least one of us cannot hear properly. -
samantha_jbg NewbiePeople tell me that I have a good voice but when I saw my self singing on a DVD we had in our school concert/show I think I sounded like a boy.
