MiSs_CrImInAl NewbieI myself am punk and I strongly believe that Greenday are just a hard rock band not punk.
It's also obvious in their song: American Idiot. Punks don't make comments about people's races. Greenday in general are not punk in my eyes. -
Ever listen to their early work? I think American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are more modern rock. If you listened to their album Shenanigans your opinion may change.

I am a very extreme fan of Green Day so I know a lot about them. There early work, all the way up to Kerplunk, was very punk. rock. Ever since then, they have changed into more rock. They are not heavy metal though

tongue NewbieGreen Day has always had a knack for melody and pop hooks that isn't usually found in punk. Albums like Dookie are pop-punk, but not punk rock. Green Day distanced themselves from the genre somewhat as early as Nimrod. Green Day has some characteristics of a punk band, most obviously the fact that Billie Joe only plays major chords, which is actually double what the Sex Pistols and Ramones played. The politics is also very characteristic of punk. But their melody and sonic bombast on albums like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown don't have much in common with punk rock. Actually Green Day have sounded alot like The Who and The Kinks lately(older bands from way before I was born- look em up if you don't know em.)
All that said, Green day is an amazing band that proves how silly the concept of genres is. -
