well the thing is, it boils down to how much it's gonna cost.

First of all, if you don't have the knowledge, you better have a big check book because your gonna screw your ride up if you fool around with the mechanics without knowing what your doing.
Also there's an issue with resources and cost. Things like break pads, spark plugs, oil change ect. those things are little things. You can do it yourself for a tenth of the cost you could have it done for you. But then you get some stuff that is gonna cost you more to buy the parts, the tools to work with, and find the time to do it, then it would to just take it to a mechanic and have the sucker pop a new piece in your car.

so it really varies. unless your just a hobbyist and got time and money to kill.
