I can't seem to find the thread, but I believe this has been brought up before. I personally am not opposed to the idea, but the main reason it was objected last time (if my memory serves me right) is that it would encourage users to use the forums much less often and would end up as people PMing eachother and no one else, thus leaving people joining the site feeling somewhat alone or assuming the site is dead.
