I found this at the back of my history book from Mexico..
Translations can be a little rusty, sowwy.
Uruguay (Roberto) : The country's name comes from an Indian word that means "river of the coloured birds".
Venezuela (Victoria) : The country's name signifies small Venecia. Spanish explorers chose this name because the chozas that were contructed over the cost of Lago Maracaibo reminded them of Venecia.
Guatemala (Linda) : The country's name comes from the word 'Quauhtlemallam', which means 'full of trees'. Modern word 'Guatemala' comes from the word 'Quauhtlemallam'.
Honduras (Guadalupe) : The country's name comes from the adjective 'hondo', which means deeps. Spaniards put the name because they found the coast of Honduras was deep and difficult to get through.
Mexico (Fernando) : The country's name comes from the tribe of the 'Mexica', which were what the Aztecs called themselves. (The meaning of the word Mexico is said to be "place where the sun and moon meet".) The Aztecs are very well-known ancient warriors of Mexico, that were eventually defeated by the Spanish and other Indian tribes of Mexico.
Argentina (Javier) : The country's name comes from the Latin word 'Argentum', which means plate (plata, in Spanish). Spanish explorers first went across Argentina's "Rio de la Plata" when first coming to explore the country.
Brazil (Esteban) : The country's name comes from Portuguese explorers who found a wood that was the colour of "brasa" (I don't speak Portuguese, but I think that translates to brass..) In time, people from colonies in early Brazil were then called "Brasilenos". Then, the new Portuguese colony became known as Brazil.
Chile (Alvaro) : Nobody really knows where the origin of Chile's name comes from. Some think it comes from an Indian word, chili, which means "place where the land ends". Others believe is comes from another Indian word, tchili, which means "cold" or "snowy". (Signifying the Andean mountain region in Chile).
Costa Rica (Maria) : The Spaniards were called "Costa Rica" once exploring around this land, which was where Costa Rica got its name.
El Salvador (Victor) : The country's name comes from the religious figure Jesus, 'El Salvador'. (The Savior)
(Religious, much?)
Idk really, I was bored and felt like sharing this. -
I like all those names. :3 Latin countries sound really cool.
