Grunge, historically though, has its roots in the 1990s hard rock scene of Seattle, Washington as a countercultural, anti-consumerism movement, music genre. The fashion was made popular by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. Grunge clothing was meant to be timeless and quite casual.

Alt is a group, grunge is a subculture. The edgier clothing is typically gothic, punk, or emo. Grunge is very laid-back--Baggy clothes, bands like Nirvana and Metallica, stuff like that. Gothic is more styled around the idea of morbid things (death, old gothic-style buildings, stuff like that). Punk is very "Fck you, I do what I want". Emo is that, essentially, but with a scene look as well. The thing any true alt person will say that each subculture has is the idea of progression. They tend to be anti-tradition, they want things to change in ways that will benefit people. You'll see these people supporting good causes like LGBTQ rights, equality, POC fights, etc.
