Stalin wasn't totalitarian and Pol Pot wasn't a communist. Pol Pot was a fascist who genocided ethnic minorities like French and was an opportunist who called himself a communist to win power because he knew the popularity of Marxism in oppressed nations. He merely used it was a guise (like a disguise) to commit his heinous acts.

Pol Pot wanted to restore the ancient Angkor empire which he blamed Vietnam for destroying. He was backed by the US who used him to spite Vietnam because of his anti-Vietnam nature. He assassinated the head of the Khmer Communist Party, he did anything to secure power and not for the people, but for himself.
