Is your OC a Mary-Sue? (Or a Gary Stu?)
Mary Sues. They are annoying to both the writers and the people who read about them. They are idealized, perfect in every way, and can only exist in sheer fiction. It's horrible when you spend so much time on your character, only to have created a Mary Sue. So, is your character a Mary Sue? Or are they compelling and realistic enough to be relatable and enjoyable to read?
A Mary Sue was originally used in fan fiction, to describe a type of female character who is depicted as unrealistically lacking flaws or weaknesses. She is perfect and amazingly beautiful, bur are irritating to readers. The term is now used to describe characters of all genders across all types of books who fit the qualities (or, to people who prefer it, male characters who fit the description are often called Gary Stu(s)).
