Monks don't even start with unarmed proficiency.
Look it up. Monks get a bonus to unarmed attack, and IMPROVED unarmed strike, but they doesn't get unarmed proficiency.
Think about that for a moment.
The game is so broken that the unarmed fighting class doesn't start with the ability to punch people without penalty. A negative 4 penalty to be exact.
A level 5 kobald can grant itself infinite stats. Spot and Listen are two separate skills. A level 3 wizard can make a rogue useless. A level 6 one can make fighters useless. A level 9 one may as well just win, because they're basically the entire party at that point. Tower shields make you permanently invisible. Dragon Disciples lose all class abilities at max level. Unearthed Arcana was basically made for min maxing.
And that's only 3.5. Don't get me started on 4, or 5. In 5, a peasant has a 1/4 chance to sell Asmodeus his own dick.
D&D is basically the most broken tabletop game there is. There's no amount of homebrewing that can make it not broken, because it's a fundamental thing written into the system. And don't just say, 'oh, you need to be more creative.' I can be more creative in a system that doesn't gimp my character from the start just as well as in one.
Just recently I played a game where the characters were:
Octopus Chuck Norris, roundhouse kicking everyone
An angel who's fighting style was freefalling on his opponent in 60 tons of armour
A robot bounty hunter who solved every issue with finger guns
Andy Trout
And a dog. Not a talking dog, just a regular dog who everyone thought was the captain because he was wearing the captain's hat.
And I did it all in a system that wouldn't fall apart the second someone found a Candle of Invocation. (Candle of Invocation = unlimited wishes, under D&d's rules.)
So don't tell me to be more creative. -
Monks are freaking o.p at lvl 20, all stats become capped.
