How come when people say 'the game' it's always referring to football? Why football? There are a ton of other sports, so how come everyone knows when someone says 'the game' it's football?

Depending on the situation, since no other American sports are on that most people don't care about on Sunday, people today would refer to an NFL game as "the game" because nothing else happened.
