"Enough." Viktor snapped, glaring at Caleb. "You can forget about that damn treaty if that's the way your going to talk about me."

‘What, so you’d risk war and loss of trade because the king consensually kissed your son?’ Caleb asked, then murmured into his glass of water, ‘Seems a bit unprofessional to me.’

"How am I supposed to trust a treaty signed by a king who badmouths me to my own son?"

‘I’ve never badmouthed you, I’m just stating the truth!’

"Caleb." Richard reached out to grab his hand to try and get him to stop before realizing how suspicious that would look, and pulling his hand away.

Caleb looked at him as he pulled his hand away and sighed.

Richard looked him in the eyes, silently pleading for him to stop arguing.

Caleb watched him for a moment. He looked away and started eating in silence.

Richard started eating as well. Viktor just stood up and left, no longer having an appetite.

Caleb watched him leave, exhaling. He watched the door close, then averted his eyes back to his food. ‘Why didn’t you defend me?’ he mumbled.

Richard looked down. "I'm sorry."

‘He knows anyway,’ Caleb mumbled.

"Caleb, you're asking me to fight my dad, which would only piss him off even more. It wasn't worth it."

‘Are you really that scared of him?’

Richard looked down, hoping his silence would prove as enough of an answer.
