Adrienne nodded and walked in, walking over to a nearby chair and sitting. “How uh, how’re you holding up?”
-
"Fine." Naomi lied. She was very overwhelmed at the moment. She hoped Adrienne didn't notice.
-
“That’s a bit hard to believe, considering the circumstances,” Adrienne said with a dry chuckle, leaning back in the chair. “It’s fine if you’re stressed. Hell, I’m stressed out right now. My life is, quite literally, on the line right now-“
-
Same here, darl. Havyn grabbed one of her pillows, holding it tight. "How long do I have to stay hidden?"
-
“I’m not sure, honestly,” Adrienne said, sighing. “I wish I could say not for long, but that most likely isn’t the case. Best case scenario, this blows over in less than a year and we’re able to keep you safe, but worst case- Worst case, you destroy all your work on your inventions, we put you into Witness Protection and you start a new life in the middle of nowhere as a new person.” She crossed her legs in the chair, running a hand through her hair. “I may just have to join you on that, if I want to make it out of this alive…”
-
Naomi sighed. The thought of just giving up on her work sounded awful. She worked so hard just to scrap everything.
-
“I’m so sorry…” Adrienne said, exhaling softly. “I know, this isn’t how you thought things would go. I know you’re freaked out, and probably hate me. Which is completely and totally valid, I would hate me too if I literally snuck into my dorm and tried to murder me.”
-
"I don't hate you." Naomi mumbled. "At least you tried to save me."
-
“But it’s bad that- that you’re the first person I’m trying to save,” Adrienne spoke with exasperation, throwing her hands up in the air. “I- I’m supposed to be some heartless, stone-cold assassin, but the minute I see a young, innocent, really p- really smart girl with- with some amazing talent, I crumple…” She exhaled shakily, blushing a little at her almost slip-up. f---, I almost just called her pretty- I mean, she is, but- GAH, I need to stooooop…
-
Naomi raised her eyebrows. She really thought that way about her?
-
“And I- I’m really sorry, honestly- I don’t wanna kill you, I promise,” Adrienne said, exhaling softly. “It’s just a facade, all a f---ing act…”
-
Naomi was shocked to silence, letting her talk. She liked seeing this side of her.
-
“I’m not even supposed to be talking to my targets, but I f---ed that up a long time ago,” Adrienne muttered, exhaling softly. “And- And now, I’m probably fired, out of a job, no way to get money for myself, or my family- Everything’s gone to s---, and it’s all my fault…”
-
Naomi sighed softly. "I get it." She murmured. "I'm so sorry."
-
“It’s not your fault, Naomi. It was never your fault,” Adrienne said with a sigh, watching the other girl with a sad, tired look on her face. “If this situation is anyone’s fault, it’s my own. If I knew I was gonna get all sappy and save you ‘n s---, I shouldn’t have taken this damn job…”
