“No, of course not, but-“ Connor exhaled shakily, slowing to a stop at a red light. “I just feel like it’s all my fault- Maybe we- maybe we shouldn’t have come to school holding hands a-and stuff, or maybe we-“ He stopped himself, shaking his head.
-
“Hun, if you’re thinking like that, I shouldn’t have kissed you that day, oky?” Evan said softly. “And I don’t regret that. So please, stop thinking like that.”
-
“I’ll try to,” Connor replied with a short nod, gently squeezing his hand. He exhaled shakily, trying to calm himself down.
-
Evan smiled softly, twisting slightly to look at Connor. He winced, gritting his teeth. “f---, that hurt-“ he said, laying his forehead on his boyfriends arm.
-
“When we get home, you’re going to lay down and rest, okay?” Connor said, rubbing the back of Evan’s hand with his thumb. He turned his head, pressing a gentle kiss on the side of his boyfriend’s head.
-
“Yeah, okay,” Evan gritted out, squeezing Connor’s hand before the pain subsided a bit.
-
Connor began driving once the light turned green, turning into the McDonalds parking lot. “You good with McDonalds?”
-
“Yeah, that’s fine,” Evan whispered, lifting his head again and resting it against the headrest behind him.
-
Connor nodded, glancing at Evan. He watched him for a moment, exhaling. “I’m so glad you’re okay,” he murmured, pulling into the drive through line.
-
Evan hummed quietly in agreement, closing his eyes as he tried to will the pain to stop. “This feels so much worse than falling out that damn tree.”
-
“I mean, I would think so,” Connor said with a soft chuckle, gently squeezing Evan’s hand. He pulled up and ordered their ice creams, quickly paying and getting them. He handed one of the ice creams to Evan, taking the other for himself.
-
“Thank you,” Evan said softly, letting go of Connor’s hand to take a lick of his ice cream. He struggled to swallow, but did nonetheless, wincing.
-
Connor pulled out of the parking lot of the McDonalds, heading back to his house.
-
Evan finished his ice cream just before they got back to Connor’s house. He pushed himself out of the car, gripping the door for a moment as he steadied himself. “Is your mom home? Maybe she could help.”
-
“Yeah, I think she is,” Connor replied after he finished his ice cream, getting out of the car. He walked over to Evan’s side and wrapped an arm around his waist, holding him up as they walked to the door.
