‘What was that face you made?’

"What face?" Ernie asked.

‘You made a weird face when I mentioned your dad.’

"Oh, that's-uhm..." Ernest didn't know how to explain it without a whole awkward embarrassing sob story. "He's... Not the greatest."

‘Oh.’ Mahina sat down on the bed, twirling her staff around in her hand. ‘What did he do?’

Ernie shrugged. "Fought. And yelled. A lot. And then he... He kind of kicked me out of his house." Ernest didn't realize it, but his eyes were welling up with tears. He looked down at the floor, not wanting to look her in the eye.

Mahina frowned. She shuffled closer to him and grabbed his hand. ‘I’m sorry,’ she said, craning her neck to look him in th eye.

Ernie shook his head. "You didn't do anything." He said quietly.

‘Why did he… do that stuff?’ Mahina said softly. ‘You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.’

"I might've dropped out of the village school to try and earn some extra money." Ernest admit. "It's really stupid..."
(Gonna go for a bit, I'll be back at some point!) -
‘That’s why he kicked you out?’ Mahina asked. ‘Why did you need extra money?’

"There were these new books for sale, about a bunch of new studies about ocean life and one about ancient history, and I wanted to get them, so...." He chuckled dryly. "It's dumb, I know."

‘And he didn’t like you were a total geek?’ Mahina asked, in a part joking voice.

Ernie chuckled, more genuine this time. "No, he definitely did not."

‘Why not?’ Mahina asked. ‘I mean, you are a geek, but it’s cute.’
