"Not important." Ernest mumbled after a bit, not wanting to tell her the rest, mostly out of embarrassment.

Mahina frowned. She looked away. ‘Fine, then.’

"Sorry." Ernie said quietly.

Mahina shrugged. ‘It’s fine,’ she said quietly. She was hurt he didn’t feel like he could confide in her, even when she’d told him her biggest secret.

Ernest looked down at his shoes, knowing very well that it wasn't fine, but he felt too embarrassed- no that wasn't the right word... Shameful?- to tell her.

Mahina turned away. She pulled out a loaf of bread and started to make lunch.

"Sorry." Ernie repeated quietly, leaning against the counter.

‘It’s fine,’ Mahina mumbled, but avoided his gaze.

"No it's not."

Mahina didn’t reply to that. She grabbed out an avocado from a cabinet and cut it open.

Ernest fiddled with his hands nervously.

‘It’s fine,’ Mahina said under her breath.

Ernie didn't hear since she said it so quiet.

After a few minutes of awkward silence Mahina set two sandwiches on the table. It would’ve been easier to let her magic do it, but it gave her an excuse not to talk to Ernest.

"Thanks." Ernest said quietly, taking a bite.
