Mildred was not a poetic person. As much as she loved books, she wasn't all that good at understanding metaphors, but she still liked the poem. 'What's this one about?' she asked, setting the paper in front of him.
-
Jack looked over and immediately got embarrassed. "Oh geez, that's the one you chose. W-well... It's about how beautiful it would be if the last trace of humanity was a message of love. The poem tells about a world where everything is gone except for a stone tablet by the ocean that is inscribed with a love letter." Jack said, nervously explaining his teenage poem.
-
'So you are an emo vampire, aren't you?' Mildred teased, even if she liked the poem. 'It's pretty good, y'know. I don't know what you were so embarrassed about.'
-
"it's not good, it's shallow and it's rhyming scheme is archaic and falls apart at the end. If I showed it to a critic they'd probably laugh at me." Jack said. He had always been a harsh critic of his own work.
-
'Pfft. It's better than what I could do,' Mildred said, sitting on the edge of Jack's desk and picking up the poem again, rereading it.
-
"that's just because you haven't had the time to write poetry or study it in depth. I actually spent hours with a thesaurus and I could only come up with the word her to match joyful. It totally broke my rhythm.
-
'Well, I like it,' Mildred said with a huff, putting the paper back down on his desk. 'I doubt most people would have the patience to look through an entire thesaurus.'
-
"they'd probably just know better words... I just... I expect myself to know more words to put into my poems. I expect myself to rhyme them well. I've lived for over 700 years and have all the books I could ask for and still, I can't find a synonym for melancholy." Jack said
-
Mildred thought for a moment. ‘Sad,’ she suggested. ‘You have much better things to be doing than looking for words. You technically don’t really need them.’
-
"I suppose I don't. I just wish I were a better poet since I can't be a better scientist." Jack said as he pondered the next line of the letter after his introduction
-
‘You’re a king, though. Or prince, I guess. And you’re a good person. And you have money. Everything else isn’t really mandatory,’ Mildred said, grabbing one of his quills and inspecting it.
-
"not quite. Our kingdoms work differently. If I'm part of the royal family I'm meant to change the world. That's how it's supposed to work. I haven't changed my world yet. If all goes according to plan though, I will." Jack said
-
‘You’re meant to not screw up your kingdom,’ Mildred said. ‘That’s your entire job. And you’re pretty good at not screwing up a kingdom.’ She paused, leaning back on her hands. ‘What’s your plan?’
-
"first I'll introduce my kingdom as a peaceful kingdom that has lived in hiding due to our fear of prosecution. Then I'll write that we are vampires. Then I hope to highlight my intentions, how I want to establish peaceful trade. After that I'll highlight what my kingdom can do for the humans." Jack said, going over the formatting of his letter
-
‘Then the humans and vampires will be friends, and everything will be good. Right?’ Mildred looked over his shoulder at the letter.
