(Sorry, I was trying to concentrate on learning a new language and responding when typing such a short response lol)
"What is everyone doing here? What's the purpose of this place?" were the first questions out of Jaime's mouth. If he knew the purpose, it would either clarify why he was there, or confuse him even more. -
I just got a random boost of motivation no worries))
"We're all here because we were indebted in one way or another. Our leader, Question as you may know him, was the one who freed us from our debts and offered us a chance to start over. Wipe the slate clean." Her words were clear, precise. "I chose a new name and a new future for myself. It is forbidden to discuss our past lives. For you, however, there might be an exception to that rule. You are not like the rest of us." -
"Why are we in the middle of nowhere, though?" Jaime asked. For starting over, so many people here under lock and key seemed more like a prison than a refuge.
-
"So that we can't be found, obviously. Another reason is security. Anyone who runs can be easily caught and safely disposed of. There's no one around for miles and miles. The only people who leave the compound must go through a series of security measures before they can leave. This ensures that we don't have people slipping out in disguise."
Her eyes had a sharp glint to it. "So if you had any ideas of running away, forget them. You're lucky to still be alive after your little stunt." -
Jaime nodded. So there was a general way out, but he had a feeling that he wouldn't be allowed to leave through that process.
Suddenly another question popped to mind, burning inside his head. Should he ask it? Probably not. Would Quinn get mad? Most definitely. But...
"Is this a cult?" he asked. -
"Don't be ridiculous," Quinn snapped, her tone brittle as she stared straight ahead, not deigning to look at him. She shoved a door with unnecessary force, sending it flying open with a bang.
It lead into a massive cafeteria room, filled with lively chatter. The people at the tables seemed young and all wore the same outfit, which was silvery gray. At the disruption Quinn made, they all slowly fell silent. -
Jaime fell silent too. He felt as if all eyes were on him not because of the loud disruption Quinn made, but because of the stunt he had pulled earlier that had put them in danger. He wasn't sorry for trying to escape, but he was sorry for hurting people in the process.
-
Quinn placed her hands on his shoulder and moved him forward. It almost looked like a friendly gesture, until you realized that she was death gripping him and firmly rooting him to the ground.
"This is your newest recruit," she said, her words clear and concise. "He has been selected by Question himself for...special purposes."
She released her grip on his shoulders. "Why don't you go find a seat? Maybe they'll babysit you for me." -
Suddenly Jaime felt like a new kid in a new school and everyone hated him already. Everywhere he looked people were glaring daggers into him. Where on earth would he sit without people trying to gouge out his eyes?
Eventually he spotted a small patch of people who didn't look quite so much like they wanted to gut him. He swift made his way over, keeping his head down as he quickly sat down. -
There were three people sitting at the same table as Jaime. There was a girl with bubblegum pink hair and freckled skin, who was humming something to herself as she poked at the food on her plate. She didn't seem to notice that he was there. The boy at her elbow was staring pointedly at Jaime, his dreadlocks swaying as he straightened his glasses. The final member of the table was a boy with sitting on the same bench as Jaime, who had been mid-bite. He had tan skin and dark hair and looked frozen, unable to peel his eyes away.
"Elliot, stop it. Staring is rude," the boy across from Jaime said.
Elliot seemed to break out of his trance, setting his fork down and scowling at the other boy. "You were staring too, Jaden!"
"That's different. I was observing him," Jaden said with a cheeky grin, before prodding the girl beside him. "Lily, snap out of it. Look at the new guy."
The pink haired girl glanced at Jaime absentmindedly, stabbing a pea with her fork. "You shouldn't be here," she said distantly, before looking back down at her plate.
"Of course he should be. Reject table, remember?" Jaden reminded her. "She does have a point though. You look kinda old for a recruit, no offense." -
Recruit. He'd heard that word here before, hadn't he? Possibly from Quinn? But the word "recruit" implied they had come here willingly. Had they been kidnapped like him and learned to adjust? Or had they sought refuge from Q?
"Well, I didn't exactly have any choice in the matter or coming here," Jaime muttered. "If I did I don't think I would come. No offense." -
"Well, I'm Jaden, he's Elliot, and she's Lily," he said, pointing to each person in turn. "You should introduce yourself. It's rude not to, you know."
"It's also rude to call someone rude," Elliot countered.
"I never said that. I said it'd be rude. Honesty is important, you know," Jaden said, arranging his peas into a straight line.
Lily's eyes moved up from her plate to Jaime's face. "You picked a bad place to sit. Now you're be a social outcast."
"No offense, but I think he would've been one regardless of where he sat. He kinda had it coming," Elliot said, glancing at Jaime briefly to see if he took offense.
"You always say "no offense" before you say something offensive," Lily scolded, leaning over the table to reach Elliot's plate. He swept it out of her reach and she pitifully slumped on the table.
"Sharing is caring."
"Well, I don't care. Finish your own food."
Jaden rolled his eyes at the two, turning back to Jaime and resting his chin in his hands, his elbows propped up on the table and the peas forgotten. "So, what is your name? I hope it's not something like David. There's too many Davids in this world." -
"Jaime," he answered. "And I am sorry about earlier. I didn't have any clue what was happening and the only thing I could think of was escaping. I didn't think other people would get hurt."
-
Jaden grinned at him. "Swell. A fellow J."
Elliot turned her head to face Jaime, his face scrunched up in a puzzled way. "What are you talking about?"
"He tried to escape and people got hurt in the process," Lily explained.
Elliot leaned over the table and swatted at her. "Okay, psychic," he snorted with sarcasm.
She rolled her eyes and parried his blows with her fork. "I'm not a psychic, I listen. Ever heard of that before?"
Jaden frowned. "You tried to escape? Why?" -
Jamie looked at him like he was crazy. "Would you try to escape if you were kidnapped?"
