Julia nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard him and practically flew to the other end of the bench. She had been so focused on her daisy chain that she hadn't even noticed. She began to calm down. "Uh, hey. What's up?"
-
``I uh, I just wanted to apologize for uh, for earlier,`` Aiden said rather forced, rubbing his hands against his jeans.
-
Julia toyed with a strand of hair, feeling incredibly awkward at that moment before she sighed helplessly and dropped her hands into her lap. "No, I should be sorry. I was a jerk to you back there."
-
Aiden nodded, running a hand through his hair. ``Yeah. And I'm sure this place is great,`` he said, looking around.
-
"At first glance it can be kinda..," Julia drifted off, gesturing around at the town. "Well, disappointing. But there's more to it then you'd think. Do you want me to show you around?"
-
``Uh, sure,`` Aiden said hesitantly, standing up from the bench. He awkwardly held his hand out to the girl, offering to help her up.
-
Julia wanted to show independence and that she didn't need help, but it occurred to her that it wasn't just help. It was sort of like a handshake. She took his hand with an acknowledging nod and stood up. For some strange reason, her stomach fluttered. She waved it away as being touch starved after surrounding herself with nothing but plants.
-
``So, what's your name?`` Aiden asked as he let go of the girl's hand, putting his hands in the pockets of his jeans. ``I'm Aiden, by the way,`` he added, shifting his weight from one foot to the other as his gaze shifted idly around him.
-
"I'm Julia Cambert, nice to meet you again," the brunette said, laughing lightly before surveying the town. "So, where shall we start?"
-
``Uh, wherever you want to, I guess,`` Aiden suggested, crossing his arms. ``I mean, I don't really know the place so it's your job to show me around. As if that weren't obvious,`` he said, his sentence quieting.
-
Julia wasn't entirely sure what how to respond, so she shrugged. "Fair enough. This is the fabulous park, home to squirrels and some nasty ducks. They're little beasties, they are," she said, squinting into the distance as if scouring the ducks with her gaze.
-
Aiden nodded as he followed Julia around, his arms crossed and a blank expression on his face. ``Not very big, but it's.. nice,`` he said, looking around at the surroundings.
-
Julia plucked a red maple leaf from a tree, twirling it around in her hand as golden and red leaves fluttered down around them. "Hold still, you've got a leaf in your hair," she said to Aiden, a small smile forming on her lips.
-
Aiden turned slightly red from her comment, getting any leaves out of his hair. ``Thanks for telling me, I guess,`` he said awkwardly, not knowing what else to say.
-
"No problem," Julia said, biting her lip to keep from smiling even more, her cheeks feeling warm. She turned her attention to the leaves. "Aren't they lovely? If I could paint anything, I would paint this."
