"I think we're all settled here," the man said. "Follow me." He stood up from his chair and walked out of the Library. He was taking her through a part of the facility that she didn't recognize. She realized that she was being led outside.
What did outside look like? Would it be gray just like the prison? Or would there be more? They reached a door. The man opened it and Sophia gasped at the sight. There were colors everywhere that she couldn't even describe.
"Come on," the man said and he led her to a large black metal thing with doors and wheels and windows. He walked to the thing and opened the door and sat down in the driver's seat. She did the same, but in a different seat.
Sophia gave a small "Oh!" when it started moving. She gripped the leather seats in surprise. She soon relaxed and looked out the window, watching the world pass by with startling speed.
Sophia stared out in awe. She couldn't even describe it. There were a bunch of buildings with lights saying open and people walking in and out of these buildings.
Soon they were in a place with a bunch of different buildings. We're these what houses looked like?
After about five minutes the big metal thing stopped. "This is the house you're staying at," the man said.
After a few moments of experimenting with buttons and handles she. found the one that opened the door.
As soon as she had stepped onto the sidewalk the man sped away. He had taken her to the correct house, but he didn't care much. for what happened to her after.
She walked up to the nearest house, wondering what she should do. She didn't want to come in unannounced. She saw a little button next to the door and pressed it. She heard a little sort of ringing on the other side of the door. -
The doorbell rang once. Weddell looked up from his book and stood up. "Get the door!" Weddell's mother shouted. "That's what I was going to do," Weddell grumbled, not loud enough for her to hear. Weddell opened the door and was surprised to see someone who looked like a Prisonborn. "I thought you were in prison" was all Weddell said, then realized that that seemed a little edgy if the girl actually was a Freeborn. "Sorry, I might have said that a little too fast. Are you a Prisonborn?" Weddell asked.
-
Sophia slowly nodded. She showed him the two notes she had been given, the one saying that she was going to be released and the other with the address. "I was dropped off here," she said quietly. "Is this the right place?"
-
"Yeah," Weddell answered, frowning at the Prisonborn. "Come in…" he trailed off, staring into space, then regained his focus. "Come in," he repeated firmly.
-
Sophia stepped over the threshold and looked around. It was so different from what she was used to. She didn't know what even half the things in there were. She felt as if she were just thrust into some strange world.
-
"So, I'm Weddell. You?" Weddell introduced himself pleasantly.
-
"861-53," she immediately said purely out of habit. "No, wait...they gave me a name...what was it...Sophia," she said, finally remembering. "My name is...Sophia."
-
"So, what crime are you up to committing in this house?" Weddell's stare hardened, and his voice took on a sharp edge.
-
Sophia tensed up and just shook her head quickly. His voice was reminding her of the guards when they'd talk to the prisonborns.
-
"So, what are you here for?" Weddell asked, slightly less aggressively.
-
"They just said I was going, gave me this...they called it an address, and dropped me of here," Sophia said. "I have no idea..."
-
This must be the test, Weddell realized. He'd heard about it on TV. One Freeborn was to be selected... he felt genuinely sorry for Sophia. "Well, come in," Weddell said finally.
-
Sophia took another step farther in. Hadn't she already come in? She looked around the room. There was an odd-looking long chair, a few other chairs, a short table, and a box with glass on the front. It looked so strange.
-
"You'll get used to the stuff," Weddell assured her. "So, that's the couch," Weddell said, gesturing. "It's more comfortable than those wooden chairs."
-
"We had metal ones," Sophia said. "What's wood?" She sat on the couch and tensed up when it sank underneath her. She relaxed when she realized that it wasn't going to collapse underneath her.
