"We're leaving in two hours," his mom told him sharply. "Don't even think about bringing your phone," she added as Jax reached for it.

Jax mumbled something, but didn’t protest further. He knew that it was pointless. "Okay," he agreed submissively. "Good," his mom replied. "Let's get packing. Only the bare essentials."
While Jax was shoving his clothing into a suitcase, he thought about Aspen. What would she want me to do? The answer immediately came to him, but then he thought, There's no way I can stay. -
Leo fell asleep in the crook of her arm

Jax finished packing and handed his stuff over to his mother. “Our flight’s departing in one hour and a half,” she said as they got in the car. Curtly, Jax replied, “You don’t have to remind me.” He was silent for the rest of the ride.

It had been a wild week. Jax had spent a week in China. It wasn’t so bad; he got to try new food. It was just that the trip seemed so out of the blue, even with his great-uncle's death as a reason. -
Aspen had sat in one spot all week, her mom took flurry on walks while her and flurry stayed on her bed

Jax took Maxie for a walk the instant they got home. (This is happening now, in the present, not in the past.) He thought, I miss Aspen. Maybe she'll be at the dog park.

Jax sat down on a bench and watched Maxie play with other dogs. He only intervened to scoop up Maxie's poop or tell him he was a good boy.
