Elise sat alone in the empty café. At this moment, it was only occupied by herself and the girl at the counter, who had actually gone to the back.
It was two o’clock in the morning, so of course, the place wasn’t very busy. Smooth jazz played in the background as Elise listened the sound of herself sipping at her tea.
She finished her bagel, flipping through the pages of the book she was currently reading, a romance novel of course. She was somewhat of a bookworm, and enjoyed visiting this particular café after her late shifts at the office.
She was only an editor, but her job was mostly enjoyable. It was well-fulfilling, in her opinion, for someone who had just graduated high school a few months prior. -
Alex walked into the cafe hearing a small bell announce his entrance. He looked like he had just rolled out of bed, which was actually the case. He ran his hand through his thick mess of dark brown hair in an attempt to smooth it down but without realizing it he only succeeded in making it messier.
He hadn't been able to sleep a wink that night. He didn't like just laying there doing absolutely nothing so he had decided to go to the cafe that was near where he lived.
Alex walked up to the counter and asked for some earl grey tea. He knew he probably shouldn't be having caffeine this late at night/early in the morning, but it had always been his favorite, ever since he had tried it nine years ago when he was nine years old. Once he got his tea he sat down near a girl, the only other person in the building. -
Elise took a sip of tea, trying not to catch the attention of the guest who just walked in.
She sighed, and out of curiosity, turned her head. She observed the boy; quite messy, not too muscular, but not very slender, probably just woke up or was incredibly restless.
As Elise observed this boy, she began to recognize him. She realized it was her neighbor who lived across the street. Elise had never really interacted with him aside from a few good mornings and “How was your day?” -
(Not sure if that last part is her talking to him or if she's still thinking about the few things they had said to each other or both)
Adrian stared into the white mug, the tea inside shifting this way and that. After a moment he took a sip. He felt the familiar feeling of the liquid untying the knots in his stomach.
He was worried about his sister. The results were finally going to come out today for what she was sick with. He hoped it was nothing bad. He hoped she'd get over whatever she had. -
(Oh, it was her thoughts. She didn't actually say anything. I apologize for not making that clearer).
Elise scoffed as she dusted off her thighs—which may or may not have been covered in bagel crumbs—and grabbed her purse. Her golden hair was tucked behind her ear on her right-hand side, and her soft waves bounced as she began to walk towards the door.
Elise felt a chill down her spine, and this is when she realized that something wasn't okay. She turned around to see the worried look spread across her neighbor's face. She wanted to tell him that it would be okay, but she struggled to even remember his name.
Elise sighed, and walked out of the door, shaking her head as it closed behind her. -
(Don't worry about it, it's fine)
Alex sighed and quickly finished his tea. His older sister had always been there for him and yet he wasn't there for her now.
He walked out of the cafe. Worrying about it would do no good either to him or to her. He walked back to his house. He didn't even make it to his bedroom but fell asleep on his couch. -
Elise made it home safely, dropping her bag off at the bench by the door, as well as her coat.
She walked into the bathroom to change into her pajamas and wash her face. Afterwards, she walked downstairs to sit in the living room for a while.
Despite working all day, she wasn’t tired at all. She glanced at the picture frame sitting on a small, round table.
Her mother had passed away recently, leaving Elise alone in the house. Elise sighed again, and peeked out the window. She saw the boy from the café and smiled, knowing he had made it home safely. -
Alex woke up midmorning the next day. He quickly looked at his voicemail. No calls. He took a shower, got dressed and had something small and bland for breakfast. He didn't think he could stomach anything else.
Alex decided a walk was in order. It was a nice day, and he needed to get out of the dumps.
He walked down the driveway and down a few sidewalk squares when his phone started ringing. He stopped walking and answered it.
Alex put his hand on his head and started pacing back and forth between three sidewalk squares like he usually did when he was intently listening in on a phone call.
His face lit up and there was a big grin on his face. She was alright. His sister was going to be okay. When the call ended he couldn't help but give a shout of joy. -
Friday.
Elise didn’t work on Fridays.
After showering, Elise made herself a cup of tea, and turned on the television (as if she thought the weather forecast was interesting). She sat on the sofa, opening her book. Only a few minutes of reading went by when Elisa decided she was bored, a thought of going out for a walk. She headed outside, locking the door behind her.
As Elise walked through her neighborhood, she spotted a familiar figure. It was her neighbor again. He was on the phone, so she decided not to greet him. -
Alex put his phone back in his pocket, the grin still on his face unable to come off. He started walking again. Today was a good day.
"Morning!" He called cheerily to the girl across the street who he remembered seeing on various brief encounters. -
“Mm,” Elise mumbled as she turned towards the boy. “Good morning to you,” she replied nodding her head. She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear with her fingers, smiling shyly.
-
Alex thought for a moment. "I think I saw you at the cafe last night. What were you doing up so late?"
He walked across the street to where she was. If they were going to have a conversation it would be easier to do it next to each other rather than shouting across the street. -
“Late shift at the office, and I needed somewhere to relax after a long day,” Elise answered, nodding her head. “And why were you there so late?” She giggled and looked over to the boy's eyes.
