"If you die it's not over," Adrian said. "Lucifer will still try and use other tactics, he won't give up. And you're the only one that can stop him."

"But I don't know how!" Katherine said helplessly, wringing her hands in distress. "You could get hurt and I wouldn't be able to do anything!"

"We're going to London in a couple weeks," Adrian said. "I have some friends there who will be able to train you better than I."

Katherine sat down on the couch, seemingly at a loss of what to do. "Why me?"

Adrian rubbed the back of his neck. "I don't know yet, but that's the way it is.'

Katherine hugged a cushion to her chest. She felt so overwhelmed and so very, very small.

Adrian realized something. "I'm sorry," he said. "I'm putting too much on you in such little time."

"It's not your fault," Katherine said, pulling her hair out of her face with a soft sigh. "You don't have to apologize for anything."

"You're my charge, I should be apologizing," Adrian said.

"No, you really shouldn't," Katherine insisted. "I would have died in that river if you hadn't been there."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "And the consequences if I had let you die would be severe."

"So you're telling me that you did all that out of duty?" Katherine said. "That you wouldn't have helped me otherwise? Forgive me if I don't believe that."

"You're forgiven," Adrian said. "Now I think it's time we turn in for the night."

"Probably," Katherine said, getting up. She hugged Adrian. "But thank you...for everything."

Adrian was unaccustomed to hugs. He wrapped his arms around her. "You're welcome," he said.
